Black smoke and loss of power in Ford Ka 2020: looking for advice and experience

Loud hissing on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Whistling noise

Strong exhaust smell

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hi guys, I've noticed a few worrying symptoms on my 2020 Ford Ka with a petrol engine and 73960 km on the clock and hope someone can help me. Black smoke is coming out of the exhaust during acceleration, the check engine light is constantly on, the car is jerking and there is a noticeable loss of engine power. I also notice a loud hissing and whistling during acceleration, the fuel consumption is miserable and the exhaust smell is excessive. I suspect the reason could be a deviation in the boost pressure control. Has anyone had similar experiences with their car and can perhaps tell me how it went when it was repaired in the workshop? My last visit to the mechanic was rather unsatisfactory, so I would be really grateful for your tips and experience reports. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I had very similar problems with my 2017 Ford Fiesta. In my case, the boost pressure regulator was electrically defective. This actually led to increased fuel consumption, poor performance driving and the check engine light constantly coming on. Similar to your case, black smoke came out of the exhaust and the car jerked and hissed during acceleration. On my last visit to the garage, the mechanics had to replace the boost pressure regulator and reprogram the engine control unit. In addition, they did a check of the check engine light as well as the exhaust system to make sure all components were working properly. However, it was not an easy fix and took some time, so be prepared. It is definitely a serious problem that needs to be fixed immediately to avoid further damage to the engine and other parts of the vehicle. Hope this info helps you!

Hello, thank you very much for your quick reply and the helpful information! Your situation actually sounds very similar to mine. There really does seem to be a problem with the boost pressure regulator. Can you still remember how much you had to pay for the repair? As soon as you go to the garage, it usually adds up quickly and I would like to have an approximate figure. And has anything similar happened to you since the repair, or has the car been running smoothly since then? Thank you for your help!

Hi, sure, I can still remember it well. In the end, I had to fork out €1520 to fix the electrically defective boost pressure regulator. It's not a lot of money, I know, but since the repair the car has run like clockwork. As for the deviation in the boost pressure control that you suspected - that was exactly the problem! But since I went to the mechanic, it's been fixed. I haven't had any similar problems since, the car runs really well now and the symptoms you described have completely disappeared. So, despite the cost, make sure you get it checked. You don't want the car to suddenly give up the ghost on the highway, do you? Good luck and hopefully everything will be back to normal soon! Greetings!

Hi, thanks for the detailed breakdown, that really helps! Sure, it's a considerable sum, but if the car runs smoothly again afterwards, that's probably the best solution. At least now I know what I'm in for, both in terms of the repair and financially. And you're absolutely right - it's better to bear the costs now than to end up with even bigger problems and possibly even higher costs later. I'll call the garage first thing tomorrow morning and make an appointment. Then I hope that my car will soon be running smoothly again. Thank you again for your help, it has helped me a lot! Greetings!
