Black smoke and loss of power in 2013 Toyota Hilux diesel: seeking advice on DPF regeneration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my 2013 Toyota Hilux Diesel and need your advice. It now has 237388 km on it and has recently been giving me trouble: black smoke when accelerating, engine light on, less power, problems with DPF regeneration and a strong exhaust smell. I suspect that the efficiency of the particulate filter is too low, but I'm not sure. I had a bad experience with my last garage and don't want to go in blind. Have any of you ever had similar symptoms with your diesel and can tell me what the problem was? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello, I can understand your problem very well, as I experienced something similar with my 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser. I had similar symptoms, the car smoked a lot and the performance was greatly reduced, the infamous engine light was also on. The garage determined that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) was defective due to high mileage. The DPF is responsible for absorbing and burning soot particles that are produced when diesel fuel is burned. If it no longer works properly, this leads to the symptoms you have described. It was a pretty serious issue as the car was practically unusable until the problem was fixed. In the end, the DPF had to be replaced. It was quite a job, but since then the problems have gone and the car is running perfectly again. So it could well be that your Hilux has the same problem. I would advise you to go to another garage and have the DPF checked. Hopefully that will help you!

Hi, thanks for your helpful reply! That sounds very much like the same problem I'm having with my Hilux. Do you remember what you paid for the repair back then? And have there been any other problems or unexpected expenses since then? Hope you can still remember!

Hello, you're welcome! Annoying, such a problem, I know. But luckily I was able to solve the problem with the low efficiency of the particulate filter. I paid 1550 euros for the repair, specifically the replacement of the diesel particulate filter. A bit steep, but as you know, it's better than driving on and on and ending up with no car at all. I haven't had any more trouble with the car since then. Fortunately, I can't report any further problems or unexpected expenses. And my Land Cruiser has been running like clockwork ever since. Hope that helps you!

Hi, thanks for the info! Yes, that is indeed a hefty price, but if everything works again afterwards, it's worth it to me. I will now look for a decent garage that I can trust this time. Your story was really helpful for me. Thanks again for your comments!

It sounds like your Hilux might be experiencing a problem with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system. Frequent regeneration and high fuel consumption can be symptoms of a clogged or malfunctioning DPF. I recommend you to have a thorough check of the DPF system. This should include checking for any leaks or damage, as well as a forced regeneration and cleaning if necessary. Please keep us updated on your progress and let us know if you have any further questions.

@Costea

Yes I also did a forced regeneration and at the last diagnosis he said that the amount of soot in the filter is not high

It's possible that the issue might not be with the DPF itself, but with the sensors that monitor the DPF system. Faulty sensors can cause the vehicle to think the DPF is full and needs to regenerate more often than it actually does. I would suggest having the sensors checked and replaced if necessary. Please keep us updated on your progress and let us know if you have any further questions.

Costea

I don't know, I don't really know, could it be sensors that control the regenerations?
