Black smoke and irregular engine running in S-Class (2011, petrol): Troubleshooting tips and workshop recommendations welcome

Hey guys, I have a problem with my S-Class (gasoline engine, 2011, 178151 km run). My car produces black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, the engine suddenly stalls, feels rough and twitches when accelerating. Feels like it doesn't have as much power as it used to and fuel consumption is high. When idling, it sometimes stalls and after starting it smells strongly of exhaust. I suspect this has something to do with the fuel injectors. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me a tip on which garage is good for this? I didn't have such a good relationship with my mechanic last time, so I'm hoping for your experience. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2011 S-Class experiencing black smoke, engine stalling, rough acceleration, reduced power, and high fuel consumption. The initial suspicion is faulty fuel injectors. Another participant suggests checking the engine control unit (ECU) as a potential cause, based on similar past experiences with an E-Class. The suggested solution is to have the ECU inspected and possibly repaired, which resolved similar issues in the past.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had similar symptoms with my E-Class (gasoline engine, 2008, about 160000 km run). The black smoke, high fuel consumption and twitchy acceleration were also present with me. It turned out that a defective engine control unit was the culprit. The engine control unit controls many functions in the engine, so if something is wrong, there can be a whole range of symptoms. Injectors could of course also be the problem, but I would definitely have the ECU checked. It was a serious matter, but my garage managed it well. The repair took a few days, but it varies depending on the garage. Now everything is as it was before. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your car!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! I didn't have the engine control unit on my radar, but of course it's also a possibility. I'll definitely look into that. Can you still remember how much it cost you? Did the engine control unit cause problems again after the repair or was everything OK afterwards?

Hey, you're welcome! So, the repair cost me €1000. It's not a small amount, I know, but it was worth it. Since the mechanic overhauled the whole thing, everything has been running smoothly again. So the functional restriction of the injection has been rectified. Since then, the engine doesn't stall and there are no other problems. It feels as if the car is running exactly as it used to. So I can definitely say: after the engine control unit was repaired, everything was great again. Good luck with your car, hope this solves your problem too!

Thank you very much, that sounds encouraging. 1000 € is quite a lot, but if everything works again afterwards, I'm prepared to invest the money. I'll go to the garage first thing tomorrow morning and have the engine control unit checked. Hopefully that's the cause in my case too. I'm glad to hear that your car is now running like it used to. I hope I can say the same next time. Many thanks for your advice! See you later.
