After my mechanic read out the error, it turned out that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) was internally defective. The "DPF internally defective" message means that the filter is heavily contaminated or damaged and is no longer working properly - i.e. it can no longer filter enough particles. This results in unburned fuel and particles coming out of the exhaust - hence the black smoke and the stench. This is definitely a serious problem because the engine performance suffers and the car should no longer be driven. In my car, the DPF had to be completely replaced as cleaning was no longer possible. Depending on the degree of contamination or damage, a repair could therefore require the filter to be replaced.
