Black smoke and engine problems with my Toyota Hilux 2015

Unsteady engine

Longer cold start time

Loss of engine power

Car won't start

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Hey guys, I've got my 2015 petrol Toyota Hilux with around 260196 KM on the clock and it's currently doing some pretty strange stuff. As soon as I step on the gas, black smoke comes out of the exhaust and the check engine light is permanently on. The car starts very hesitantly and loses engine power more and more often. The engine runs unevenly and jerks when accelerating. Sometimes the car won't start at all, sometimes it stalls while idling and jerks. I already had a bad experience at the garage last time and actually want to avoid going back straight away. My guess is that the whole drama could have something to do with a faulty fuel injector. Has anyone here ever had similar problems and can tell me about their experiences? It would be great if you could give me some tips or experience reports. How did you deal with this at your garage? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2012 Toyota Hilux. Unfortunately on my car it wasn't a fault in the injector. It was actually a faulty plug/cable connection. It was quite annoying because the car ran just as rough and jerked when accelerating. And just like yours, sometimes it wouldn't start at all or stalled while idling. Long story short, I had to take it to the garage after all. They changed the faulty plug/cable connection there and the car was back to normal. So it wasn't a huge or severe problem, but it definitely required a visit to the garage. Hope this helps you! Good luck!

Hey, it's great that you didn't have a complex problem and that you were able to have the connection changed to sort everything out. Do you remember how much it cost you in the end? And have you had any other problems with your Hilux since then? Many thanks for your help!

Hey! Ah, I remember - replacing the faulty plug/cable only cost me €155, which just wasn't that much on the pocket. Since then, other parts of the Hilux haven't caused any trouble, thank goodness! By the way, I did indeed have a suspected defective function of an injection valve, as you suspected - but that was nonsense. When I went to the garage, it turned out to be OK. They simply checked it and then it was out of my head. Good luck with your Hilux, don't let it get you down!

Hey that's good news, I could still afford to pay that much money for a repair. I really hope my problem is just as easy to fix. Your experience takes away some of my worries, thanks for that! Still, I'm annoyed that I'll probably have to go to the garage after all, even though I really wanted to save myself the trouble. But your post has made me realize that it's better to tackle the problem directly before it gets worse. Thanks again for the helpful tips! I'll get back to you when everything is sorted out so that you know what it was in the end. Until then, keep your chin up, guys!
