Battery weakness and light problems with Ford Excursion (2004) - experience and tips wanted

Weak battery when starting the engine

Dim or flickering lights

Hi folks, I'm having a bit of a problem with my Ford Excursion (petrol engine, built in 2004, driven approx. 149751 km). When starting, the battery weakens and the lights flicker or are dim. I think the battery has self-discharged a lot. Has anyone here had similar problems? What are your experiences with the workshops? I had a few inconveniences last time, so I'd like to know what to look out for. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I've been there. I had a similar problem with my Ford Explorer (built in 2001). It turned out to be a defective control unit. The symptoms were similar to yours, starting difficulties and flickering lights. It was a really serious problem because it can affect everything else in the car. At the garage, they replaced the control unit and did a few additional checks. It took a while because they had to order the right replacement part, but once that arrived, it was pretty quick. Don't forget to have your battery checked, though, as the problem may be there after all. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the quick feedback. That makes me think that it could also be the control unit. Do you happen to remember how much it cost you to replace the ECU and have the additional checks done? And have there been any other problems with your car since then? Any side effects or anything? Thanks in advance!

Hey, no problem! So, replacing the faulty control unit cost me €600. So it wasn't exactly cheap, but since then my car has been fit again. Since I've been to the mechanic, there have been no more problems with the vehicle battery discharging itself. It was really annoying because I was constantly panicking that the car wouldn't start. But luckily it was fixed after the visit to the garage. So, no side effects or anything. Hope that helps you!

Great, thanks for the info! It's not exactly cheap, but if it helps in the long term, it's worth it. I don't want to have to constantly worry that my car won't start all of a sudden. I think I'll pay a visit to my garage and explain the problem. And I'll definitely have the battery checked, just to be on the safe side. Thank you very much for your help! Hopefully everything will go just as smoothly for me. Have a nice day!
