Last serviced at 88747 KM. The grinding noise seems to be the biggest concern, especially when the window tries to move up. I tested the fuses as suggested but they all appear fine. The windows start moving but stop halfway, producing a loud mechanical sound coming from inside the door panel. The window regulator seems to struggle most in cold weather. Based on the symptoms you described, it appears my issue could be more serious than just a faulty switch. One window motor already started smoking after a failed attempt. The repair quote I got is 850 Euro for parts and labor to replace the regulator assembly.

Thanks for those additional details. Yes, based on what you describe, your window regulator issue appears more severe than the switch problem I initially dealt with on my Audi A8. The grinding noise, smoking motor, and weather-related symptoms strongly suggest a failing window regulator assembly. The 850 Euro quote actually sounds reasonable for parts and labor, considering all symptoms point to a complete regulator motor failure. When my switch issue eventually progressed, I also had to replace two regulators six months later, costing around 900 Euro. The smoking motor is particularly concerning, this usually indicates the regulator motor is working against resistance in the window track, likely due to: Worn guide rails in the regulator assembly, Damaged window track components, Seized pulleys in the mechanism From my experience with the Audi window system, once you see smoke from the regulator motor, attempting further operation risks complete mechanism failure. The cold weather sensitivity you mention is also a classic sign of worn regulator components. Getting the full assembly replaced now could prevent additional damage to other door panel components. Just ensure the automotive repair shop includes a warranty on both parts and labor.

Thanks for sharing your repair experience. The grinding and smoking definitely confirms this is more serious than I initially hoped. The symptoms match what you described with worn guide rails and seized components. Since my power windows are getting worse in cold weather and the motor is already smoking, I will proceed with the full window regulator replacement at 850 Euro. I am a bit relieved the quote is in line with what others paid for similar automotive repair work. Will make sure to get warranty coverage before authorizing the window regulator assembly replacement. The complete failure risk you mentioned has me concerned about further damage if I keep operating the power windows in this condition. For future maintenance, I will pay more attention to the window track condition and watch for early warning signs like grinding or sticking. Really appreciate the detailed feedback on common failure points in these systems, it helped confirm that investing in proper repairs now is the right call versus waiting for a complete breakdown.

As someone with moderate experience working on Audis, I encountered a similar power windows issue with my 1998 Audi A8. The window mechanism failed completely across multiple doors, showing comparable symptoms. After inspection, the main culprit was a faulty power window switch in the driver door panel. The whole repair, including diagnostics and parts, cost 200 Euro. This was significantly cheaper than replacing the entire window regulator assembly, which was my initial concern. The automotive repair shop found that moisture had damaged the switch connections over time. They recommended checking and cleaning the window track regularly to prevent future issues. Before suggesting more specific solutions, could you share: Have you noticed any grinding sounds when attempting to operate the windows? Does the problem occur more frequently in certain weather conditions? Are all windows completely non-responsive, or do they move slightly before stopping? Have you checked the fuses related to the power windows system? This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or if it might be a different problem within the window mechanism.
