Audi S8 Alternator Symptoms Signal Costly Repair Ahead

Hi, need advice on what seems like alternator replacement coming up. My 2012 S8 is struggling to start up lately and I notice dimmed headlights, especially at idle. Dashboard warning light came on and engine power feels reduced. Car has 185121 KM on the clock. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic, so looking for recommendations on typical repair costs and reliability indicators to watch for. Also curious if anyone has dealt with similar symptoms, was it actually the alternator or something else? Want to be prepared before heading to a shop this time.

Had similar alternator issues on my 2015 Audi A7 3.0T last winter. The symptoms perfectly match what I experienced, dimming lights, sluggish starts, and reduced engine performance are classic signs of an alternator issue affecting the electrical system. My alternator completely failed after about a week of warning signs. The car electronics started acting erratically, and eventually, the car wouldn't start at all. The battery was fine but couldn't maintain charge due to the failing alternator. The repair required a complete alternator replacement along with the serpentine belt since it showed wear from the faulty alternator pulley. It was a serious repair that took two full days at the shop because accessing the alternator on these engines requires removing several components. Important indicators to check: Battery voltage reading below 13.5V while running, Squealing noise from the belt area, Multiple electrical system warnings, Dashboard battery warning staying on Would suggest getting it checked soon, these symptoms typically worsen quickly and could leave you stranded. The alternator powers critical car electronics and ignition systems, so driving with a failing unit risks sudden complete electrical failure.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds very similar to what happened on my S8. Did you remember roughly how much you paid for the alternator replacement and serpentine belt work? My charging system is showing the same issues with the battery low warnings and dimming lights. Also curious if youve had any other electrical problems since getting it fixed? Want to make sure Im covering all bases before heading to the shop, since a car wont start situation would be really inconvenient right now.

Got my car back from the shop last week after dealing with those exact alternator issues. The generator replacement and belt work came to 960 Euro total, which included labor for removing various components to access it. Money well spent though, as the car runs perfectly now with no more battery warnings or dimmed lights. Have not experienced any electrical problems since the repair. Starting is strong and instant, headlights are bright even at idle, and all systems are working as they should. The charging system is maintaining proper voltage, which resolved those annoying battery low warnings completely. One tip: while they have everything apart for the alternator replacement, have them inspect the surrounding components and wiring. Better to catch any potential issues when they already have access rather than paying labor twice. My mechanic checked all the electrical connections and replaced a few worn clips at no extra cost. Getting it fixed before complete failure was definitely the right call. Nothing worse than having a car that wont start due to alternator problems, especially given how quickly these symptoms can progress to full system failure.

Just got back from having the alternator replacement done. Total bill came to 1150 Euro which included the new alternator, serpentine belt, and labor. More than I wanted to spend, but the voltage drop issues were getting worse and I couldnt risk being stranded. The mechanic showed me the old alternator, the bearings were completely shot which explained the weird noises I was hearing. They also found some corroded wiring connections while doing the work and fixed those at no extra charge. Car starts up strong now and all the electrical problems are gone. No more dimming headlights or battery warnings on the dash. The starter motor engages instantly instead of that weak cranking I was getting before. Really glad I got this sorted before it left me stranded somewhere. Going to keep a closer eye on the charging system readings from now on to catch any issues early. Lesson learned on not waiting too long when electrical problems start showing up.
