Audi Q7 Airbag Warning: Rollover Sensor Malfunction Fix

Last service was done at 45000 KM. This happened right after a regular maintenance service where they also performed a software update. The vehicle rollover sensor started showing errors gradually over the past week. No other warning lights are active besides the airbag warning. The vehicle safety system seems otherwise normal, though I am concerned about the airbag sensor reliability. The main SRS warning started flashing before becoming constant. I have the 3.0L TFSI engine variant and hadnt had any airbag-related issues before the recent service. Would it be safe to drive the car to a workshop with this automotive sensor fault, or should I have it towed?

Based on your description, the timing with the software update strongly suggests a calibration issue, which is very similar to what I experienced with my Q5. This scenario is quite common after service work involving software updates. Since your rollover sensor issues appeared gradually and theres no physical damage involved, the vehicle safety system is likely in a limited functionality mode rather than completely disabled. The crash detection systems typically maintain basic functions even with sensor errors. I drove my Q5 to the workshop with similar airbag sensor warnings, but kept the trips minimal. Your situation sounds nearly identical to mine, especially with the warning light progression from flashing to constant. The safety system should still provide basic protection, though not optimal. For reference, when my control unit was replaced, they found the software update had created compatibility issues with the existing rollover sensor calibration. A complete reset and recalibration of the SRS sensor network resolved everything. Driving to a nearby workshop should be acceptable with these symptoms, but: Avoid long distance travel, Take direct routes, Drive cautiously, Keep your speed moderate If the workshop is more than 30 minutes away, requesting a tow would be the more cautious choice. The repair costs in your case might be lower than mine since it could be just a calibration issue rather than a full control unit replacement.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. This is very helpful, especially the part about software updates potentially causing calibration issues. I feel more confident now about the source of the problem and the next steps. Given the gradual onset and the relationship to the recent service, I will drive it carefully to the nearest workshop tomorrow morning. The route is only about 15 minutes away, so that should be within safe limits based on your experience. Will keep my speed moderate and take the most direct route as suggested. Really hoping its just a calibration issue rather than needing a full automotive sensor replacement. The rollover sensor malfunction seems very similar to what you experienced after your software update. I will make sure to mention the recent service and software update to the technician. The fact that the airbag sensor and vehicle safety system warnings developed gradually rather than suddenly does suggest its likely a calibration problem rather than a complete failure. Will update once I get the diagnosis and repair completed.

Had a similar issue with my 2018 Audi Q5. Having some experience with these safety systems, I can share what worked for me. The crash detection system started showing similar symptoms, persistent airbag warning light and SRS sensor errors. The rollover sensor was giving false readings despite no accidents or impacts. After initial attempts to reset the system failed, I took it to a workshop. The diagnostic revealed a defective control unit in the safety system. This isnt something you can fix yourself since it involves critical safety components. The repair involved replacing the control unit and recalibrating the entire SRS sensor network. Total cost was 1000 Euro including parts and labor. Given that this involves core safety systems, I would strongly recommend getting it checked immediately. A malfunctioning sensor failure could compromise the entire airbag system in case of an actual emergency. To provide more specific guidance about your Q7: Which engine variant do you have? Have you noticed any other warning lights? Did the issue start suddenly or gradually? Have there been any recent repairs or battery disconnections? This information would help determine if youre dealing with the same sensor failure I experienced.
