Audi Q5 Charging System Failure Warning Signs

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

My Q5 seems to have generator issues, battery light comes on, engine feels sluggish and lights are dimming, especially at idle. Car starts poorly in the mornings too. The OBD scan shows a charging system error. I am worried about getting overcharged at the shop since my last repair experience wasn't great. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their Audi? Mine is a 2023 with the 2.0T gas engine, about 155k on the clock. Just wondering if this points to a failing alternator and what I should expect repair-wise.

Had similar charging system issues on my 2020 Audi A4 with the 2.0T engine. The symptoms matched exactly, battery warning light, dimming headlights, and rough starts in the morning. The alternator replacement became necessary after the OBD confirmed a charging system fault. The alternator failure was a serious issue that required immediate attention. Driving with a failing alternator risks complete electrical system shutdown and potential engine stalling while driving. The repair involved removing several components to access the alternator, including the front bumper cover and various engine belt components. The battery also needed testing as alternator issues often impact battery health. In my case, the failing alternator had stressed the battery, but it still tested good after the repair. The engine misfire symptoms disappeared once the new alternator was installed, and the charging system returned to normal operation. Worth noting that when the starter motor begins working harder due to low battery charge from a bad alternator, it can mask the real problem. Getting a proper diagnosis from a qualified shop is essential since these symptoms can mimic other electrical issues.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That alternator issue sounds exactly like what I am dealing with. The car won't start reliably and shows all those charging system symptoms you mentioned. My Audi is still under warranty so I am hoping to get it covered, but curious about costs in case they find something else. Did the repair fully resolve your starting problems? Can you remember roughly how much you paid for the alternator replacement? Just want to be prepared if warranty does not cover it and other repairs come up.

I can confirm the generator repair completely fixed all those charging system problems. The voltage drop issues, dim lights, and hard starts disappeared right after the fix. The total repair cost was 960 Euro for parts and labor, which included a thorough check of the serpentine belt and related components. The shop verified the battery was still good after testing, as the early diagnosis prevented permanent battery damage. It is important to address generator faults quickly since running with low voltage can strain other electrical components. My car has been running perfectly for months now with no engine misfire or starting issues. The charging system maintains proper voltage even at idle, and morning starts are consistently strong. The repair was worth every cent considering how critical the generator is to the overall vehicle operation.

Just visited the shop about my alternator issue from last week. What a relief, the whole repair went smoother than expected. My warranty covered the alternator replacement completely. The service tech confirmed the charging system had been failing gradually, causing all those annoying symptoms. They completed the work in about 4 hours, testing both the new alternator and the existing battery. The voltage drop problems are completely gone now. No more dimming lights, sluggish engine response, or difficult starts in the morning. The serpentine belt looked worn so I had them replace that too, the only out-of-pocket cost at 85 Euro. Really glad I did not wait longer as the tech mentioned the failing alternator could have left me stranded or damaged other electrical components. The car runs like new again, maintaining proper voltage even at idle. Definitely learned my lesson about addressing charging system warnings promptly.
