Audi A8 Transmission Warning: Sensor vs Total Repair

Thanks for the detailed reply. My current mileage is 75474 KM and the last service was just 2 months ago. The automatic transmission started acting up right after that service. I noticed the issues are worse when the engine is cold, and there are no visible oil spots under the car. The transmission warning light is the only one showing on the dash. I checked with another workshop just yesterday and they mentioned similar experiences with faulty transmission oil sensors causing these symptoms. Though the previous service included a transmission oil change, they suspect a defective oil sensor might be giving incorrect readings to the control unit.

Thanks for the additional details. The fact that your transmission issues started right after the service and are worse when cold actually strengthens my suspicion about the transmission oil sensor being the culprit. This matches exactly what I experienced with my A6. After my initial response about the oil level issue, I actually had the transmission oil sensor fail completely a few months later, showing similar symptoms to yours. The transmission repair specialist found that faulty oil sensors can indeed send wrong temperature readings to the control unit, causing erratic shifting patterns especially during cold starts. The workshop replaced the transmission oil sensor for 280 Euro including labor. The fix resolved all the symptoms, no more grinding noises, rough shifting disappeared, and the transmission warning light turned off. The automatic transmission has been working flawlessly since then. Given that your problems started after a service, its worth having them check if the oil sensor was perhaps damaged during the oil change procedure. A damaged sensor can trigger overheating problems and put the transmission into emergency mode even when actual oil levels and temperatures are normal. Consider getting the sensor replaced before exploring more expensive transmission repairs. Based on both my experiences, this seems like the most logical first step for your symptoms.

Thank you for sharing those details about your transmission issues. Your input about the cold-start problems and recent service helps a lot with understanding the situation. The fact that the gear shifting problems began right after the transmission oil change is quite telling. Given the lack of oil spots and the cold-start symptoms, I feel more confident that my transmission sensor might indeed be the root cause. Its reassuring to hear that others have resolved similar issues with a sensor replacement rather than major gearbox work. Im going to schedule the oil sensor replacement next week. The 280 Euro cost seems reasonable compared to what a full transmission repair would run. Will check back here to update on whether this fixes the rough gear shifting and warning light issues. Just to make sure, was your repair done with an OEM sensor or did you use an aftermarket part? Want to make the right choice for my A8.

As someone with some hands-on experience working on cars, I faced a similar situation with my 2005 Audi A6 last year. The symptoms match exactly what you described, rough shifting, grinding, and transmission warning lights. The transmission issues turned out to be related to low transmission oil levels, which was causing the temperature sensor to give faulty readings. After a complete check, our workshop found that the gearbox sensor was working fine, but the low oil level was triggering overheating problems. The fix included a transmission oil level check, proper refill, and diagnostic reset. Total cost was 365 Euro including labor and materials. Since then, the transmission has been shifting smoothly with no warning lights. To help diagnose your case more accurately, could you share: Current mileage, When was the last transmission service done, Are there any oil spots visible under the car when parked, Does the problem occur more after the car has been running for a while, Any other warning lights showing up This information would help determine if your A8 is facing a similar issue or if there might be other underlying problems with the transmission sensor system.
