Thanks for sharing your experience. My A6 has 171334 KM on the odometer with the last service completed just 2 months ago. The transmission problems started last week and are getting progressively worse. The control module warning light started flashing intermittently before the automatic gearbox went into emergency mode. No previous transmission work has been done and the car runs normally when warm. The symptoms are definitely more pronounced during cold starts, similar to what you described with your A4. The car computer shows multiple error codes related to the transmission control, which makes me think your diagnosis about the control unit might be accurate for my case too. A 1000 Euro repair cost would be manageable compared to a full transmission replacement. Will get it checked at a workshop that specializes in transmission control module repairs.

Thanks for those additional details. The symptoms you describe, especially the intermittent control module warning light and worse performance during cold starts, are nearly identical to what I experienced with my A4. The mileage is also in a similar range to when my transmission control unit failed. The fact that your gearbox issues appeared suddenly and are getting worse, combined with multiple error codes in the car computer, strongly suggests electronic issues rather than mechanical wear. In my case, the cold start problems were a key indicator that pointed to a faulty transmission control unit. Since the repair on my A4, I have clocked another 80000 km without any gearbox issues or electronic problems. The transmission control unit replacement completely resolved the emergency mode and erratic shifting behavior. One tip from my experience: make sure the workshop performs a full diagnostic scan before and after the repair. The automotive ECU needs proper programming after the new control unit installation to ensure all systems communicate correctly. Let us know how the repair works out, would be helpful for others facing similar transmission control problems with these models.

Thanks to everyone who shared their insights. Just wanted to close this thread with a quick update on my A6 transmission problems. Took it to a specialist workshop and they confirmed it was indeed the transmission control unit causing the gearbox issues. The repair ended up costing 1200 Euro including diagnostic work, parts and programming. The automatic gearbox is now shifting perfectly with no more electronic issues. The emergency mode warning has cleared and all transmission problems are completely resolved. Cold starts are smooth and the paddle shifters work normally again. For anyone searching the forum with similar symptoms, definitely worth checking the control unit before assuming you need a full transmission repair. The electronic issues can mimic mechanical gearbox problems, but the fix is much less expensive than a complete transmission replacement. Will report back if any transmission problems return, but so far the car is running like new after 3 weeks and about 1000 km of regular driving. Thanks again for helping diagnose the issue correctly.

As someone with some experience in transmission issues, I had a very similar problem with my 2002 Audi A4. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, especially the emergency mode and rough shifting patterns which pointed to electronic issues rather than mechanical transmission problems. The car computer was showing multiple error codes during the transmission diagnosis. After several tests, the workshop confirmed it was indeed a defective control unit causing these gearbox issues. They initially tried to reprogram the unit, but ultimately the control unit needed replacement. The repair took about 2 days and cost around 1000 Euro, which included the new control unit and programming. Since the fix, the transmission has worked flawlessly with no more electronic issues. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your A6, When did these symptoms first appear, Have you had any previous transmission work done, Are there any other warning lights on the dashboard, Does the problem occur more when the engine is cold or warm This information would help determine if your case matches the electronic control unit failure I experienced or if there might be other underlying gearbox issues.
