Audi A6 Power Tailgate Freezes Midway, Sensor Alert

Need advice on power tailgate issues with my 2020 Audi A6 (59k km, gasoline). Getting an error code and the tailgate stops halfway when opening. Suspect it might be a hall sensor fault since the sensor wiring was recently checked during service. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for experiences before heading back to the shop, as my last repair visit was quite disappointing.

Had the same issue on my 2017 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI. The open tailgate system kept failing mid-operation, showing similar error codes. After multiple checks, the problem was traced to a faulty electrical sensor connection, not the hall sensor itself. The root cause was a damaged wiring harness where the cables flex when the tailgate moves. This created intermittent connection issues, causing the system to stop as a safety measure. While sensor calibration was attempted first, it did not resolve the problem. The repair required replacing the entire tailgate wiring harness assembly since individual sensor wiring repair is not recommended on these systems. This was a significant repair that took several hours to complete due to the complexity of accessing and routing the new harness. For your A6, recommend having the shop specifically check the wiring connections at the flex points near the tailgate hinges. The sensor wiring often shows wear in these areas, and a proper inspection might reveal similar damage. This is a known weak point in the power tailgate system.

Thanks for the detailed feedback on the wiring harness issue. The sensor fault symptoms you described match exactly what I am experiencing with my power tailgate. Good to know it was the wiring and not the sensor itself causing problems. Quick question, do you recall roughly how much the repair ended up costing? Also, has the tailgate been working reliably since getting the wiring harness replaced? My A6 is still under warranty but trying to get an idea of costs if needed down the road.

After seeing the mechanic, they traced and fixed the tailgate hall sensor fault. Unlike my earlier case where the entire harness needed replacement, they found a simpler issue with a loose connector near the hinge area. Total repair cost was 95 Euro for fixing the cable connection, much less than a complete harness replacement. The automatic tailgate has worked flawlessly since the repair. No more stopping midway or error codes. The sensor wiring repair proved to be the right solution, and the open tailgate system now functions as designed. If your A6 is still under warranty, definitely get it checked as this type of sensor fault should be covered. Just make sure the shop performs proper sensor calibration after any wiring repairs to ensure smooth operation. The diagnostic fee might be different at your service center, but the fix itself should be similar if they find the same connector issue.

Thanks for the guidance. Finally got my power tailgate fixed and wanted to share the outcome. Took it to a different mechanic who actually listened to the symptoms and checked the wiring first. Turns out it was exactly as suggested, a damaged wire connection near the hinge area. The electrical sensor was getting intermittent signals due to a pinched wire, causing the tailgate motor to stop out of nowhere. Total repair came to 280 Euro including the diagnostic work and sensor calibration. Been two weeks now and the tailgate works perfectly. No more error codes or stopping halfway. Glad I got a second opinion instead of rushing into replacing the entire system. The repair was also much quicker than expected, only took about 3 hours total.
