Hey buddy, I feel you! I had exactly the same problem recently with my Audi A6 2005 diesel, which has just cracked the 250,000 km mark. For me, the charge air temperature sensor was actually the culprit. I had similar symptoms to yours - black smoke, loss of power, strange noises and the fuel consumption had gone through the roof. I then took the car to my regular garage and they immediately read out the fault memory. It was then clear that the charge air temperature sensor was faulty. They then replaced it on the spot. It cost me about 170 euros. Since then, the car has been running like clockwork again! It's best to read out the fault memory first. Especially if the engine light is on, it could be that several error codes are stored.
