Audi A5 model year 2018 - Engine problems, high fuel consumption and possible problems with the throttle potentiometer

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Jerking on acceleration

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Hello community, I recently started having problems with my 2018 Audi A5 with gasoline engine. The check engine light comes on, the engine shuts down unexpectedly and runs rough overall. I also have a loss of power, jerking when accelerating and quite high fuel consumption. It occurred to me that the throttle potentiometer could possibly be the problem. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and been able to solve the problem in the workshop? Would love to hear your experiences. Any tips will help me! Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm not an expert but I recently had a similar problem with my 2016 Audi A4. Basically have medium experience. When the same symptoms appeared on my car, I went to my garage. The problem was that the cable connection/plug connection was faulty. The repair cost me around 95 euros. Since then, the car has been running smoothly again. It would be good if you could provide more details about your vehicle so that we can offer you a more precise solution. What exact fault codes does your car display? +1 for finding a good garage! Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. My mileage is 39632 km, so not that high yet. Unfortunately, I don't have any exact fault codes as I don't have an OBD scanner. However, the garage didn't find anything unusual at my last service. I'll have the cable connection checked. Your tip really helps me. Ciao!

Hey, you're welcome and I'm glad if I could help! With the mileage, it's quite possible that no major problems have occurred yet. It's good that you're having the cable connection checked. Maybe it really is just that. However, the symptoms you describe also sound a bit like a possible problem with the injection. Perhaps there is too much or too little air in the mix? But then the workshop should also notice this. Oh, and perhaps an idea for the future: having your own OBD scanner can be really helpful in the long run. You can then read out the error codes yourself and are not dependent on the workshop. Hope it clears up quickly and your A5 will soon be running smoothly again! Keep us up to date. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the new tip and the support! I will definitely think about getting my own OBD scanner. It certainly makes sense, you invest once and then always have the option of checking the data yourself. I will also discuss your comment about the injection problems with the garage. I'll let you know as soon as I know more and hopefully the problem will then be solved. See you then!
