Audi A4 TFSI Rough Running: VANOS System Warning Signs

Latest service was done 2000km ago with full oil change and general inspection. After checking my error codes with a scanner, I got P0011 and P0016. There is definitely something wrong with the camshaft timing. The engine misfire is most noticeable during cold starts and when accelerating between 2000-3000 RPM. The VANOS solenoid replacement cost sounds reasonable, but I want to ensure the timing chain is also checked while they are working on it. Oil analysis from my last service showed normal wear levels with no metal particles, so I am hopeful it is just the solenoid causing the timing issues rather than more extensive damage. Will book it in next week and request they inspect both the VANOS system and timing chain components. Thanks for sharing your experience, it helps narrow down the likely causes.

Good to hear you got those specific error codes checked, P0011 and P0016 definitely confirm what I suspected about the camshaft timing. Had the exact same codes on my A6 before the VANOS solenoid replacement. The cold start symptoms and 2000-3000 RPM issues match my experience exactly. Your proactive approach with oil analysis is smart, clean oil results suggest the timing chain is likely fine. My VANOS solenoid was definitely the culprit in my case, and since you are seeing such similar symptoms and codes, I would bet on the same. However, having them check the timing chain while they are in there is absolutely the right call. In my repair, they did a visual inspection of the timing chain components while accessing the VANOS solenoid, only added about 30 minutes to the labor time but provided peace of mind. After my repair, the check engine light cleared immediately and fuel consumption returned to normal within 2 tanks. The engine response, especially in that problematic 2000-3000 RPM range, was noticeably improved. Let us know how the repair goes, would be helpful to confirm if your experience mirrors mine.

The timing chain inspection suggestion makes sense. I will definitely ask them to document the chain condition while replacing the VANOS solenoid. Given the clean oil analysis and similar error codes you experienced, I am more confident now that the solenoid is the main culprit behind my engine misfire and timing issues. The check engine light came on again this morning and the poor response in that 2000-3000 RPM range is getting worse. Have booked it in for next Tuesday and requested they do a full inspection of both the inlet camshaft timing components and chain while fixing the VANOS system. Will update once the repair is done. Hoping for the same positive outcome you had, would be great to get back to normal fuel consumption and performance. Thanks for sharing such detailed info about your experience. Saved me from worrying too much about potentially larger issues.

Had a similar issue with an Audi A6 2.0 TFSI, which is mechanically very close to your A4. Based on some experience with VAG engines, the symptoms you describe match what I encountered. The main issue turned out to be a faulty VANOS solenoid on the intake side. Initially noticed increased fuel consumption and sluggish acceleration, especially at lower RPMs. The check engine light was intermittent at first but became constant. Took it to an independent workshop specializing in VAG engines. They diagnosed low power issues stemming from the VANOS system. The repair involved replacing the inlet camshaft solenoid valve, which resolved both the performance issues and the warning light. Total cost was 250 Euro including parts and labor. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Current mileage on your A4? When was the last oil change done? Are you getting any specific error codes? These details would help confirm if your situation matches what I experienced. Sometimes these symptoms can also indicate timing chain issues or oil sludge buildup affecting the VANOS operation, especially if maintenance intervals were stretched.
