Just had a full service at 24162 KM. Got my diagnostic results back and it shows P0299 code which explains the boost pressure problems. The mechanic found corroded vacuum lines near the pressure sensor and a failing actuator causing the turbo lag. The throttle body was actually surprisingly clean when they checked. The whistling noise stopped completely after replacing the vacuum lines, but I am still getting the check engine light occasionally. Will keep monitoring how it performs over the next few days before deciding if more repairs are needed.
Thanks for the update on your A4. That P0299 code definitely confirms our initial suspicion about the boost control system. The corroded vacuum lines near the MAP sensor are a common failure point that can cause those exact symptoms you described. While replacing the vacuum lines is a good start, the intermittent check engine light suggests there might still be an underlying issue with the turbocharger system. In my A6, the check engine light persisted until we addressed both the vacuum lines and the wastegate actuator together. The intercooler connections might also need inspection, as leaks there can cause similar symptoms. Based on your low mileage, I would recommend: 1. Monitor the boost pressure readings with a scan tool 2. Have the wastegate actuator tested under load 3. Check for any leaks around the intercooler connections My turbo issues were fully resolved only after completing all these steps. The initial vacuum line replacement helped with the whistling, but the complete fix required addressing the entire boost control system. Keep track of any turbo lag or power issues you notice, as these are good indicators of whether the current repair was sufficient.
Thanks for following up about the code P0299. The corroded vacuum lines near the pressure sensor definitely explain the boost issues and turbo lag I was experiencing. Good to know my throttle body checked out clean, that was one less thing to worry about. Since the whistling stopped after replacing those vacuum lines, that is encouraging progress. The intermittent check engine light is still concerning though. Will keep a close eye on performance over the next few days. If the power delivery stays inconsistent or the light keeps coming on, I might need that wastegate actuator replaced too. Based on the helpful advice, I will have them inspect the intercooler connections during my next visit if problems persist. The low mileage suggests this should not be a major ongoing issue once properly fixed. Really appreciate all the detailed input to help diagnose these boost control problems before they got worse.
Had nearly identical issues with my 1999 Audi A6 TDI. With some experience working on turbo diesels, these symptoms immediately pointed to boost control problems. The check engine light and power loss were exactly what I experienced. The wastegate was stuck, causing irregular boost pressure. The MAP sensor readings were all over the place, making the engine management system confused. Took it to a specialist workshop where they diagnosed a defective wastegate actuator. The complete repair included: Wastegate valve replacement, New vacuum lines, MAP sensor calibration, Full diagnostic system reset Total cost was 860 Euro which included parts and labor. After the fix, boost control was restored, power returned to normal, and fuel economy improved significantly. To better assist with your case, could you share: Current mileage, Any recent maintenance history, Whether the throttle body has been cleaned recently, If you have access to diagnostic codes from the check engine light This information would help determine if your A4 is facing the same wastegate issue or if there might be other factors involved.
