Audi A4 Avant: Check engine light, engine failure and misfiring

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Hello, I have a strange problem with my Audi A4 Avant gasoline engine. The check engine light is on and the engine switches itself off, plus there is a loss of engine power. The engine runs unevenly, jerks when accelerating and there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes. I suspect that misfiring could be the problem. Have any of you ever had similar problems and if so, how did you get them resolved at the garage? What were your experiences? I am very grateful for any advice.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2008 Audi A3, almost the same model as yours. I have little experience with cars, but I was able to get my problem solved at the garage. It turned out that the cable connection to the injector/injector was defective. The repair cost me 95 euros, but since then the car has been running perfectly again. It would be helpful if you could provide more information about your car, such as the exact year of manufacture and the engine used. That could help me to give you a bit more detail. Hope this helps you for now!

Thank you for your answer! My A4 is a 2010 model and has a 2 TFSI engine. It currently has about ga km on the clock and the last service was about 5 months ago. I will take your advice to heart and have the injectors checked. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks again for your help!

No problem! We're not far apart with your 2010 A4. At the time, I also had the service close to your appointment and mileage. In addition to the defective injector, I also had a damaged ignition coil. Crazy, the same machine and yet different problems. Have the workshop check the ignition coils too, that could also be a cause. In my case, replacing the defective parts and the overall repair cost around 150 euros. I hope you can solve the problem soon. It's really annoying when the car keeps acting up. Let me know when you know more! All the best!

Thanks for the further suggestion! I've already made an appointment at the garage and will definitely address the ignition coil issue. I'm glad to hear that the repair costs were relatively low for you. I hope it won't be too expensive for me. You're right, it's really annoying when the car doesn't work properly. I'll let you know as soon as I have any news. Thanks again for your advice and good wishes!

Hello everyone, We had similar problems with my wife's car, an Audi A3. We bought the car second-hand and shortly after we bought it, it started to jerk from time to time. So we took it to the garage and had everything checked. It turned out that the spark plugs had never been changed (the car had just under 120,000 km on the clock when we bought it). So the spark plugs were changed and fortunately that was the end of the matter. The whole thing cost just under 200 euros, so it was still acceptable. So make sure that the service intervals are adhered to ;)

Audi A4 2017. Intermittent drive system malfunction. Will clear for a couple days then come back again. This has been going on for a few weeks. I’ve seen a lot of possibilities for this. Battery, turbo unit, exhaust, fuel rail. Will this tool narrow it down further without a dealer intervention

The intermittent drive system malfunction could indeed be due to a variety of issues. However, before you consider a dealer intervention, you could try using an OBD2 scanner tool to read the fault codes. This should give you a more specific idea of what's causing the problem. Once you have the fault codes, you can look them up to understand the issue better. Please share the fault codes here if you need further assistance.
