The mechanic at the garage eventually determined that the problem was with the clutch, but not the torque converter lock-up clutch. It was the whole clutch unit that needed replacing, a pretty serious problem. It was quite a job to take everything apart and replace it, but since then the car has been running smoothly again. And since then my A6 has been running like a kitten again, no more flying out of gear or strange noises. As for the cost, I was lucky that it only cost me €365.
