Audi A4 2004: Causes and solutions for gear slipping and howling noises when changing gear

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Whining or grinding noises

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Hey, I have a problem with my 2004 Audi A4, gasoline engine, which has already done 145861 km. The car has a few symptoms: the gear slips from time to time or shifts strangely, plus strange grinding and howling noises when shifting. My suspicion is that the torque converter lock-up clutch is malfunctioning. Could this be the cause? Have any of you ever had this problem and can report on your experiences, especially with the repair in the workshop? My last visit to the mechanic was unfortunately a flop, so I'm looking for a few tips. I would be grateful for any advice!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2007 Audi A6. Interestingly enough, the symptoms were exactly the same - gear slipping and strange noises. The mechanic at the garage eventually determined that the problem was with the clutch, but not the torque converter lock-up clutch. It was the whole clutch unit that needed replacing, a pretty serious problem. It was quite a job to take everything apart and replace it, but since then the car has been running smoothly again. I would recommend you maybe get that checked as well. Just a suggestion, hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for your answer! Do you remember how much all this fun cost you? My Audi is starting to dig into my wallet quite a bit. Has anything else happened to you since then or is it actually done now?

Hey, don't worry! After the visit to the mechanic, the problem with the malfunction of the torque converter lock-up clutch was finally solved. And since then my A6 has been running like a kitten again, no more flying out of gear or strange noises. As for the cost, I was lucky that it only cost me €365. They replaced my gearbox oil because it was worn and dirty. Hope this helps you and doesn't make you sweat any more. Good luck with your Audi!

Hey, thanks for the info! It's reassuring to hear that everything went well for you afterwards. I hope that €365 will also be enough for my repairs and that I won't have to invest any more. I'll definitely have the gearbox oil checked, maybe that's the problem for me too. It's really great the tips you get here. Thanks again and have a good trip with your Audi!
