Audi A3 Cabrio starts badly

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Car won't start

Longer cold start time

Engine shuts off by itself

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2012 Audi A3 diesel. The check engine light is on, the engine sometimes just cuts out, cold starts take longer, engine performance drops, the engine runs erratically, the car twitches when accelerating and sometimes it won't start at all. I suspect that the fuel pump is faulty. Have you had similar experiences and can you help me narrow down the problem? I am particularly interested in how you have solved this in your workshop and what experiences you have had. Thanks in advance!

Hello folks! I have a bit of experience with cars and had a similar problem with my 2010 Audi A5 diesel. The software values for the fuel pump were set incorrectly. I then had to go to the garage. They read out the error and then reset it. They charged me 45 euros, but then the car ran like clockwork again. But to be able to help you better, I would need a bit more information about your car. Do you know if there have ever been any problems with the fuel pump? And were there any fault codes when the check engine light came on? These details could help us to narrow down the problem more precisely.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Yes, I've had a few minor issues with the fuel pump, but nothing that caused the light to come on. I haven't read out any fault codes as I don't have the appropriate device. My last service was at 176543 km, after that I only used the car for short trips around town. As I said, I would be grateful for any tips!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! What you're describing could definitely indicate a problem with the fuel pump. The symptoms are very similar to what I experienced with my Audi A5 back then. The fact that you've had minor problems with the fuel pump before also supports this theory. What you could do now is to take your car to a garage and have the fault read out there. Many garages offer this for a small fee and can then tell you directly what the problem is. Depending on the results of the fault analysis, they may be able to offer you a solution straight away. Otherwise, you could also check whether there are any noticeable noises in the fuel pump area or whether you have noticed any unusual fuel consumption. Both could be additional signs of a defective part. I hope this helps you and you get the problem under control soon! In any case, let us know what comes out of the fault analysis. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the detailed tips! I'll make an appointment with the garage and have the fault read out. I no longer feel hopeless. Thanks also for the offer to keep me up to date, I will definitely do that! As far as the noises and fuel consumption are concerned, I haven't noticed anything conspicuous so far, but I will now pay more attention to it. Thanks again for your help, it has helped a lot!
