Audi A2 with high fuel consumption and engine problems seeks advice

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Hey everyone, here is a concerned Audi owner. I drive a 2004 Audi A2, gasoline engine, which has now clocked up 109876 km. My little darling is giving me a lot of trouble: black smoke when accelerating, the check engine light is on, the engine has noticeably lost power and is running very rough. In addition, there is a jerking when accelerating and the consumption has become really extreme. I was thinking of a defect in the lambda probe heater, but I'm not sure. Have you ever had anything similar? What was your experience with the mechanic with such faults? Last time I had pretty bad luck at the garage, so I'm hoping for some useful tips. Many thanks in advance.

Hey, I have a 2007 Audi A3 and had similar symptoms to yours, except that my cruise control also failed. In the end, it turned out that the engine control unit was defective. The engine control unit is a really critical part, and the symptoms you describe could definitely point to that. My car ran like clockwork again after the replacement, no smoke, no jerking - everything was tiptop. Go to the garage and get it checked before it gets worse. Hope this helps you! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the tip about the engine control unit, that really makes sense. I was also worried that it wasn't just the lambda sensor. To be honest, I'm a bit nervous as I was asked to pay quite a lot at the garage last time. Do you remember what you paid for the repair? Has anything else come up since the replacement that I should be aware of? Thanks again and best regards!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! The repair of the engine control unit on my Audi A3 cost me a whopping €1000. It was quite a lot of money, but since then the car has been running perfectly again, so it was worth it. I can also tell you something about the lambda sensor: I actually had a defect in the lambda sensor heater once, but fortunately they were able to fix it in the workshop, and since then no more problems in that direction. So take courage, have it checked and repaired. There's no point in constantly driving with the fear that something might break. And in the end, you'll get more out of your little treasure! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the detailed information. OK, I can accept €1000 if my little darling runs like new again. I'll take my car to the garage and have the engine control unit checked. I'm also reassured by your experience with the lambda sensor. Hopefully everything will go just as smoothly for me. Thanks again for your help and advice. You have really helped me and I already feel much better. Best regards and drive carefully!
