Poor fuel economy

I have a 2000 Audi A2 gasoline with 77194 km and facing serious fuel system issues. Car wont start properly, stalls frequently, and runs terribly when it does work. The check engine light is on and fuel consumption has gotten much worse recently. My previous mechanic suggested a fuel pump failure but their diagnosis seemed rushed and unprofessional. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their A2? Looking for recommendations on whether this really points to a fuel pump issue and what a typical repair cost might be. Any auto repair shops that specialize in fuel system or automotive diagnosis work would be great to know about too.

Had similar symptoms with an Audi A3 1.8T from 2003. The fuel system issues started with rough idling and progressed to stalling. The car performance degraded significantly over just a few weeks. The symptoms match classic fuel pump failure indicators, poor starting, stalling, and increased fuel consumption. When the fuel pump starts failing, it cannot maintain proper pressure in the fuel system, leading to these exact problems. Our case required full fuel pump replacement plus fixing corroded electrical connections at the pump assembly. The connector had deteriorated, causing intermittent power supply to the pump. It was a serious repair that took several hours, as accessing the fuel pump meant dropping the fuel tank. These symptoms should not be ignored, as a failing fuel pump can leave you stranded. The check engine light likely indicates fuel pressure problems. Would recommend getting a proper diagnostic scan before any repairs. Car mechanics should test the fuel pressure and inspect the electrical connections first, as sometimes the issue can be resolved by repairing wiring rather than replacing the entire pump. The problems you describe closely mirror what happened before the pump failed completely in my case. Worth addressing soon before it leads to complete pump failure.

Thanks for sharing your A3 experience. Those classic fuel pump failure signs sound exactly like what I am dealing with. My A2 also progressed from occasional engine stalling to now being barely drivable. Did you remember roughly what you paid for the entire repair? Also curious if you had any gasoline delivery or fuel injector issues pop up after fixing the pump? Want to make sure I budget properly and know what else to watch out for.

Great news on getting my A3 fuel system sorted out! After seeing that mechanic I mentioned, they found the main issue was indeed related to fuel pump failure, but much simpler than expected. The car performance problems were traced to a faulty electrical connection at the pump assembly, no need for a complete pump replacement after all. The repair cost came to just 95 Euro for fixing the cable connection, which was way less than I anticipated. Since addressing that connection issue, the gasoline delivery has been perfect with no fuel pump problems whatsoever. The car starts right up every time now and fuel consumption is back to normal. Looking back, I was lucky it was just the electrical connection rather than needing the whole pump replaced. Have not had any fuel injector issues or other problems pop up in the months since the repair. The mechanic did a thorough job testing the complete fuel system to ensure everything else was working properly. If your symptoms are similar, definitely worth having them check the electrical connections first before assuming you need a full pump replacement.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! Just wanted to update on what happened with my A2. After getting a second opinion, took it to a specialist who properly diagnosed the fuel system. Turns out my fuel pump was actually fine, the main issue was clogged fuel injectors combined with a damaged wiring harness near the pump. The repair took about 4 hours total. They cleaned all fuel injectors and replaced the damaged wiring. Total cost came to 280 Euro including parts and labor, which was much better than the 800 Euro quote for a full pump replacement from the first mechanic. Car performance is completely back to normal now. No more stalling, starts immediately, and fuel consumption has returned to what it should be. Really glad I got that second opinion instead of rushing into an unnecessary fuel pump replacement. Lesson learned, always worth getting a thorough diagnostic before jumping to major repairs.
