Atlas Steering Angle Sensor Causing Heavy, Shaky Handling

My Atlas has become really tough to steer lately and the wheel shakes pretty bad, especially during turns. Pretty sure the steering angle sensor might be acting up since these issues started right after my last alignment problems at a sketchy mechanic. Its a 2019 with 110485km on the clock. The steering column feels completely different than before, much heavier and less responsive. Has anyone dealt with similar steering sensor issues? Looking for recommendations on getting this properly diagnosed and fixed, as I dont want to go back to my previous mechanic. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Had a similar situation with my 2016 VW Tiguan last winter. The symptoms matched exactly, heavy steering, vibrations during turns, and inconsistent response. The electronic stability and traction control warning lights eventually came on too. The steering angle sensor failure was causing the system to misread wheel position, leading to incorrect power steering assist. This also affected the electronic stability system since it relies on accurate steering angle data. Sensor replacement alone wasnt the complete fix. The entire repair included: New steering angle sensor installation, Full wheel alignment, Calibration of the new sensor, System reset to clear fault codes The repair took about 4 hours at the dealership. This isnt something to postpone, incorrect steering angle readings can affect multiple safety systems and handling characteristics. After fixing these issues, the steering returned to normal, light, responsive, and stable through turns. The electronic stability and traction control systems also started working properly again. For proper diagnosis, connecting to the vehicles computer system is essential since steering angle sensor faults often trigger specific error codes.

Thanks for sharing your Tiguan experience. It sounds just like my situation with the Atlas steering problems. Did you remember what the total cost was for the sensor replacement and alignment? My traction control light started flashing too last week which makes me think the steering sensor is definitely the culprit. Just wondering if you had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed or if the repair completely solved everything?

The complete repair definitely sorted out all the steering problems in my Tiguan. The automotive sensors are working perfectly now, no warning lights or steering issues since the fix. The steering angle sensor defective code was resolved through proper coding rather than needing a full sensor replacement, which saved quite a bit on parts. Total cost breakdown was 195€ for the sensor coding and calibration work. This included the electronic stability system reset and clearing all related fault codes. Much cheaper than I initially expected, especially since I feared needing a complete sensor replacement. The investment was worth every cent, steering feels precise again and the traction control system is functioning normally. The alignment problems and heavy steering completely disappeared after the repair. No additional issues have surfaced in the months since getting it fixed. If your symptoms match what I experienced, focusing on the steering angle sensor diagnosis should put you on the right path to resolving the problem.

I finally got my Atlas fixed last week and wanted to share my resolution. Found a certified shop that specializes in automotive sensors and steering systems. They ran a full diagnostic which confirmed the steering angle sensor was misaligned and needed recalibration. The repair included: Steering sensor recalibration, Complete wheel alignment, System reset and code clearing, Test drive verification Total cost came to 275€ for everything. The steering column now feels perfect, smooth and responsive like when the car was new. All warning lights are off and the traction control is working normally again. The mechanic explained that steering sensor issues often surface after poor alignment work, which matched my experience with the previous shop. Having a proper diagnostic done by specialists made all the difference in getting the right fix the first time. Huge relief to have this sorted. The car handles great now and no more steering problems or warning lights since the repair.
