Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey there! Having some serious trouble with my 2014 Mitsubishi ASX Diesel (51k km) and could use some advice. My car's been blowing black smoke when accelerating, engine power's down, and the DPF light keeps coming on. Pretty sure it's a DPF issue, but my last mechanic experience wasn't great. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their ASX? Would love to hear about your experiences and maybe get a recommendation for a reliable mechanic who knows their way around DPF problems. Thanks in advance!

Had the same problem with my 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel last winter. The symptoms were identical, black smoke, drop in power, and that annoying DPF light. Took it to my regular mechanic who specializes in Mitsubishi, and they found the DPF was internally defective. The internal sensors and mesh were damaged beyond cleaning, so a regeneration cycle wouldn't fix it. They had to replace the entire DPF unit. It was quite a serious issue since a faulty DPF can lead to engine damage if left untreated. The repair took about two days, but the car's been running perfectly since then, no smoke, full power restored, and no warning lights. If you're in this situation, don't wait too long to get it fixed. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can cause more damage to other engine components.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know. I'm glad to hear your car's running smoothly now. Just wondering, would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the whole fix? Also, has everything been running smooth since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm trying to get a better idea of what I might be in for with my ASX.

Hey again! Yeah, no problem sharing the details. I ended up paying 1550€ to get the DPF fixed, they found an internal defect that needed sorting out. Since the repair, my Outlander's been running like a dream! The black smoke issue completely disappeared, got my full engine power back, and that annoying DPF light hasn't shown up once. Honestly, it was worth every penny because the car feels like new again. I've put about 15,000 km on it since the repair with zero DPF-related problems. If you're seeing similar symptoms with your ASX, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out soon. I know the cost might seem steep, but it's way better than risking more serious engine damage down the line. My mechanic really knew what they were doing with these Mitsubishi DPF systems, and they sorted it out properly the first time.

Thanks a lot for all the info! Just wanted to update you, I actually took your advice and got my ASX checked out yesterday. Found this specialist Mitsubishi mechanic in town, and honestly, what a difference from my last experience! They were super thorough and found pretty much the same issue you had. The whole thing set me back about 1600 €, but you were right, it was totally worth it. They replaced the DPF unit, and I just drove it home today. Can't believe the difference! No more black smoke, engine's got its punch back, and that pesky DPF light is finally gone. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me make the decision to get it sorted before it turned into something worse. Car's running like a dream now, just like yours! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
