Astra's Wiper Woes: Warning Light Mystery Needs Solving

Wipers don't work properly

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone, I've got a 2007 Vauxhall Astra diesel giving me headaches. The wipers are acting up and not working properly, plus there's a warning light on the speedo cluster. I suspect it might be the wiper relay, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'd really appreciate if you could share how your mechanic fixed it and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had something very similar with my 2009 Vauxhall Corsa diesel. I've got some experience working on cars, but I'm no expert. Had the same symptoms, wipers going crazy and a warning light. Took it to my local garage, and it turned out to be a faulty cable connection in the wiper system. The mechanic found some corroded wires that were causing intermittent connections. Fixed it all up for about 155 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since. What trim level is your Astra, and does this happen all the time or just occasionally? Also, does it make any unusual noises when the wipers are acting up? Might help me give you more specific advice based on what I learned from my experience.

Thanks for sharing that! Mine's acting up all the time, and yeah, there's this weird clicking noise when I try to use them. Just had my service last month at 9123 KM, and everything was fine then. It just started happening out of the blue last week. I'll definitely get those cables checked out, sounds like it could be the same issue. Might take it to the garage this weekend if I can't sort it myself. Would be great if it's just dodgy wiring like yours!

Hey again! Yeah, that clicking noise you mentioned sounds exactly like what I experienced with my Corsa. When you said it started suddenly after being fine during the service, it really rings a bell. In my case, I initially thought it was just the relay too, but when the mechanic dug deeper, those corroded wires were hiding right behind the washer fluid reservoir. The clicking was actually from the motor trying to work with inconsistent power due to those bad connections. Since you're at 9123 KM, it's about the same mileage where I started having these issues. Quick tip from my experience, if you're planning to check it yourself before heading to the garage, have a look at the wiring harness near the wiper motor. That's where my mechanic found the problem. Just be careful poking around there though, I learned the hard way that there's quite a few delicate connections! Let me know how you get on with it. If your garage finds anything different, I'd be really interested to hear about it. These Vauxhalls can be tricky sometimes, but they're usually pretty straightforward to fix once you find the actual problem.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! That's really helpful about checking the wiring harness near the motor, I'll definitely have a look there first. Actually just watched a YouTube video about accessing that area, so I might give it a try tomorrow after work. The location you mentioned behind the washer fluid reservoir makes total sense too, as I noticed some moisture there recently. I appreciate you sharing your experience, it's given me a much better idea of what to look for. If I can't sort it myself, at least I won't feel completely clueless when talking to the mechanic! I'll update you once I figure out what's causing it. These Vauxhalls do like to keep us on our toes, don't they? Thanks again for all your help!
