Alfa MiTo Knocking After Oil Change Signals Danger

My engine is making concerning loud knocking sounds and the oil pressure warning keeps coming on. This started happening after my last oil change at a new mechanic. Looking for advice before taking it back. Car is a 2015 Alfa Romeo MiTo diesel with 117760 km. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? What was the cause in your case and how much did the repair cost? Worried about potential engine bearing damage if I keep driving it.

Had similar symptoms on my 2012 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 JTDm. The knocking sound combined with oil pressure warnings is often linked to oil pump failure or severely damaged engine bearings. The oil pressure gauge readings were erratic after an oil change, similar to your situation. Inspection revealed metal particles in the oil pan, indicating bearing wear. The root cause was a defective oil pump that wasnt delivering proper pressure to lubricate the engine bearings. Required a complete oil pump replacement along with new engine bearings since the damage had already occurred. This is a serious issue that should not be ignored, as continued operation can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Would strongly advise against driving the vehicle until properly diagnosed. Low oil pressure can destroy an engine in minutes. The connection between your recent oil change and these symptoms suggests possible contamination or incorrect oil specification. Having the system properly diagnosed and repaired immediately is crucial to prevent complete engine failure. Given the similar engine architecture between our models, recommend getting it checked immediately, focusing on oil pump pressure testing and bearing inspection.

Thank you for sharing your experience. My MiTo had similar oil pressure issues about a year ago. The oil pressure sensor was giving false readings after an oil change, causing intermittent warning lights, but thankfully no actual pump or bearing damage in my case. The mechanic found the oil pressure gauge was malfunctioning due to contamination in the sensor unit. After cleaning and replacing the oil pressure sensor, the problem was resolved and the knocking sound disappeared. Did the repair hold up well since then? Curious about the final cost and if you had any recurring oil leakage or low oil pressure warnings afterward.

Glad I could help earlier. Yes, the repair has been completely reliable since getting it fixed properly. The oil pump failure was diagnosed and repaired about 8 months ago, costing 755 Euro for parts and labor. The engine oil pressure has been perfect since then, with no warning lights or knocking sounds returning. The mechanic did a thorough job cleaning the entire oil system and installed a new oil filter alongside the pump replacement to prevent any contamination issues. Regular oil pressure checks show everything is working as it should, and I make sure to monitor the engine oil level weekly. Your sensor contamination issue was fortunate compared to my failed pump, but it shows how important it is to investigate oil pressure warnings quickly. Poor oil circulation can destroy an engine fast, so prompt repairs are always worth the investment.

Thanks for all the advice here. I finally got the issue resolved last week. Took it to a trusted mechanic who found the oil viscosity was completely wrong for my engine. The previous shop had used 0W-20 when my engine requires 5W-40. The incorrect oil viscosity was causing the oil pressure sensor to act up and trigger false warnings. They also found the oil filter clogged with debris from the previous service. The total repair came to 180 Euro including an oil change with the correct grade oil, new oil filter, and cleaning the oil pressure sensor. The knocking noise and warning lights disappeared immediately after the fix. The mechanic recommended more frequent oil changes for the next few months to ensure any remaining contamination gets filtered out. So far everything is running smoothly with proper oil pressure readings. Lesson learned about being more careful when trying new repair shops. Will definitely stick with mechanics who know the specific oil requirements for these engines.
