Alfa 8C Transmission Failure: Gear Selector Nightmare

My 2007 Alfa 8C is having serious transmission problems. The gear selector seems completely off, I cant engage gears properly and the shift knob feels loose. The instrument panel displays wrong gear positions, and there are grinding noises during shifts. The automatic transmission behavior is erratic and unpredictable. The car computer shows transmission-related error codes. Has anyone experienced similar issues with their 8C, particularly with the gear shift indicator and sensor problems on the instrument panel? The transmission seems to be slipping badly and I need to get this fixed. Would be great to hear about repair experiences and what parts needed replacement to solve this. What should I tell my mechanic to check first?

Having dealt with similar transmission issues on my 2009 Alfa Brera last year, I can share my experience (low expertise level, mostly learned through this repair). The symptoms match what I encountered, incorrect gear position displays on the digital display and problematic gear shifts. The instrument panel was showing incorrect information due to a faulty control unit that manages both the transmission and dashboard readings. The main issue was the gear shift control unit which affected both the physical shifting mechanism and sensor readings. The workshop diagnosed that the control unit was defective and needed complete replacement. Total repair cost was 1000 Euro including programming and calibration. Key signs to watch for: Inconsistent gear position on instrument panel, Grinding during gear changes, Erratic transmission behavior, Multiple sensor-related error codes To provide more specific advice, could you share: Current mileage, When the problems first started, Any recent transmission maintenance, Specific error codes showing on car dashboard, Whether problems occur more in certain driving conditions This would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the control unit failure.

After getting these replies, I should mention my mileage is 129181 KM from the last service in March. The gear indicator issues started showing up gradually over the past weeks. The digital display on the instrument panel initially flickered before completely malfunctioning. The gear selector problems worsen especially when the engine is warm. The automotive electronics seem most erratic during city driving with frequent gear changes. Initially thought it was just a sensor issue, but the grinding noises suggest something more serious with the transmission components. Thanks for sharing your experience with the control unit replacement. Ill have my mechanic check both the electronic control unit and physical transmission components since the symptoms match closely.

Thanks for providing those additional details about your 8C. The behavior you describe, especially the gradual onset and worsening with engine temperature, matches exactly what I experienced before my repair. The flickering gear shift indicator on the car dashboard was indeed an early warning sign in my case. When the electronic display started acting up, it was about 2-3 weeks before the transmission problems became more severe. Given your mileage and symptoms, the control unit is likely the primary culprit. The grinding noise typically occurs when the unit fails to properly coordinate the shift knob position with actual gear engagement. The automotive electronics controlling the transmission get confused, especially during frequent gear changes. My repair involved: Complete control unit replacement, Recalibration of transmission sensors, Software update for the digital display system After the fix, both the physical shifting and electronic gear indicators returned to normal operation. The total repair took about 4 days, mostly due to parts availability. One tip: have your mechanic check the wiring harness connecting the shift knob to the control unit. In some cases, damaged wires can cause similar symptoms and would be a less expensive fix than full unit replacement.

I appreciate all the detailed feedback. The connections between the electronic display issues and transmission problems make more sense now. Since my symptoms match the control unit failure pattern, especially the flickering gear shift indicator and worsening problems with engine heat, I will focus the diagnosis there first. My transmission definitely shows the same behavior with erratic gear shifts during city driving. The automotive electronics seem most affected when making frequent gear changes, just as described. The grinding noise during shifts is particularly concerning, but at least its a known issue related to the control unit rather than major mechanical damage. I will have my mechanic inspect the complete system, including: The shift knob and related sensors, Control unit connections and wiring, Digital display electrical components, Complete transmission diagnostic scan The 4-day repair timeline and approximate 1000 Euro cost helps set realistic expectations. I will also make sure they check the wiring harness before replacing the whole control unit. Thanks for the detailed guidance, this gives me a clear starting point for getting the transmission fixed properly.
