Airbag warning light on 2010 BMW 3 Series

Fault stored

Airbag warning light

ABS/DSC system is not working

Hey guys, I have a small problem with my 2010 BMW 3 series (gasoline engine, mileage 132514 km). The ABS is not working, the airbag warning light is on, and there is an entry in the fault memory. I think it is related to a fault with the steering angle sensor. Have any of you ever had a similar problem and how did it go in the workshop? Thanks in advance!

Hey, so I took my BMW 3 Series to the garage and they recognized the problem immediately. Surprisingly, it was fixed quickly and easily. Just like you, the problem was the steering angle sensor. They recalibrated it and bang - the warning lights had disappeared. Fortunately, nothing had to be replaced, which made the whole thing considerably cheaper. The final bill came to around 200 euros. Thanks again for your help, you really made my day!

Hey, so on my 2013 BMW 5 series (gasoline engine, mileage a little over 100k km) I had similar symptoms. Had a problem with the ABS/DSC system and the airbag too. I was told at my garage it was a problem with the steering angle sensor, similar to what you suspected. They had to recalibrate the sensor and all the warning lights were reset. So it really wasn't anything serious and was relatively easy to fix. So don't worry, it should be quite straightforward. At least it was for me. Hope that helps you!

Hey, thanks for your reply! Interesting to hear that you had a similar problem and that it was solved quite easily. Do you have any idea how much it cost you in the workshop at the time?

Hey, you're lucky - I remember the bill pretty well. It was more or less 240 euros for the repair of the steering angle sensor. Apparently it had lost its calibration due to a missing voltage, the guys at the workshop said, and therefore had to be recalibrated. That fixed the problem completely and the warning lights were gone after that. Good luck to you, hopefully things will go just as smoothly for you!

Hey, I noticed something. You say your BMW 3 Series has a mileage of over 132k km. I've heard that these steering angle sensor problems can sometimes occur after a certain mileage. So that could be the trigger in your case. On the other two cars mentioned here, one with about 100k mileage and the other a fairly new model, the problem occurred, was fixed and hasn't happened again since. It looks like this is a fairly common fault.

Servus, but please remember that when the steering angle sensor is replaced, the airbag must be removed, which should only be done by qualified personnel! In addition, in many BMW vehicles the steering angle sensor, or as it is called at BMW "SZL", must be programmed/learned. But this fault is relatively well known in BMW vehicles, especially with the symptoms mentioned above.

It seems like your 2010 BMW 3 Series likely has a faulty steering angle sensor, which is causing the ABS and airbag warning lights. I would recommend that you get a diagnostic scan to confirm this, you could also get assistance to recalibrate or replace the sensor. This will ensure that the wheel speed sensors and ABS module are checked too. All the best!

It sounds like the impact may have triggered your airbag sensor, causing the light to stay on. I would recommend having a diagnostic scan performed to identify the exact issue. If the airbag sensor is indeed the problem, it may need to be reset or replaced. Please remember that dealing with airbag systems can be dangerous if not handled correctly, so it's best to have a professional mechanic look at it. Let us know how it goes.
