Aging Galant's Wiper Dance: Fix for Erratic Movement Needed

Wipers don't work properly

Hey all, got a bit of a headache with my '01 Mitsubishi Galant (diesel, 54,645 km). The wipers are acting up, sometimes they're super slow, other times they just stop mid-sweep. Pretty sure it's the rain-light sensor giving me trouble. Last mechanic I went to wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar wiper issues on their Galant? What was the actual problem and how much did the fix cost? Looking for recommendations on trustworthy mechanics too, if possible. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my '04 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (diesel) last winter. The wiper behavior you're describing matches what I experienced, inconsistent speed and unusual stopping. Initially thought it was the rain sensor too, but when I took it to the garage, turned out the wiper motor assembly was failing. The mechanic showed me that corrosion had built up in the wiper motor connections, and there was also a worn-out linkage. Got the entire wiper motor assembly replaced, plus new linkages. Had the rain sensor checked too, but it was working fine. Took about half a day to fix, and it's been working perfectly since then. This isn't a major mechanical issue, but it's definitely something you want to get sorted before it completely fails, especially given the safety implications of driving without working wipers. My local Mitsubishi specialist got it done right the first time. Let me know if you need help finding a good mechanic in your area.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I had almost the exact same thing happen with my Galant last winter. Your solution sounds spot-on, I've been meaning to ask, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks? I might just bite the bullet and get mine checked out too.

Hey! Yeah, after getting it fixed everything's been working like a charm. Actually, it turned out different from what I initially thought, the real problem wasn't the wiper motor at all. The mechanic found bubbles forming under the gel pad on the windshield where the rain-light sensor sits. It was causing all those weird wiper behaviors we talked about. The fix was pretty straightforward and only cost me 62.50€. Money well spent, if you ask me! The wipers are now responding perfectly to rain, and I haven't had a single problem with the system since the repair. No unusual stops or speed issues anymore. So if you're still having trouble with yours, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out. Sometimes these small issues can be fixed much more easily (and cheaply!) than we expect. Let me know if you need my mechanic's details, they really know their stuff with Mitsubishis!

Wow, that's actually really helpful, and way cheaper than I was expecting! Finally took mine to the shop yesterday, and you're not gonna believe it, same exact issue with the gel pad! The mechanic (found a great one thanks to local recommendations) sorted it out in about an hour. Total bill came to 70€, which included them doing a quick check of the whole wiper system just to be safe. They were super transparent about everything and even showed me the old gel pad, it was pretty much shot. Now my wipers are working perfectly again, responding to rain like they should. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, saved me from possibly spending way more at my old mechanic who probably would've replaced the whole motor unnecessarily. Feels good to have this sorted before the rainy season hits! Thanks again for all your help!
