Advice wanted: Problems with the transmission and transmission oil pressure in Toyota Fortuner 2020

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Whining or grinding noises

Hey guys, my 2020 Toyota Fortuner with gasoline engine has been really bitching lately. The gears are slipping and shifting erratically, I hear a grinding noise when shifting and an annoying whine or grind in general. I suspect it could be the transmission oil pressure. Have any of you ever experienced anything like this and can give me tips on what I should check? How did you get the problem fixed at the garage and what were your experiences? I would appreciate any tips!

Hi there, I know the problem. I drive a 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser, so pretty similar to your Fortuner. I'm not a car mechanic, but I'd say I have some experience with cars as I've been tinkering around for a few years. When I had these problems, I went to my trusted garage. It turned out that my transmission control unit was faulty. The mechanics had to replace it completely, which ended up costing me 1000 euros. Of course, it could be that the problem with your car is something else, but it's definitely worth checking the transmission control unit. Can you perhaps provide some more information about your car? Do you know the exact model name and have you made any modifications? That will help me give you better advice.

Hey, thanks for the answer. My Fortuner is the 2020 model and has 125712 KM on the clock so far. I haven't actually made any major modifications, it's pretty much still in its original condition. Nothing unusual was found during my last service about 3 months ago. The idea of checking the transmission control unit sounds good, I'll bring it up at the next workshop visit. Of course, it would be annoying if it is actually broken and has to be replaced. But good, then at least I have a direction to look in. Thanks again for the tip!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! Your information sheds a little more light on the dark. The defective transmission oil pressure that you mentioned at the beginning could of course also be a reason. If this is the case, you should go to the workshop immediately, because otherwise you run the risk of the damage getting worse, which can be very expensive. However, if it is the transmission control unit and it needs to be replaced, I can say from experience that it is quite expensive. On the other hand, once it's done, your car should run like a charm again. However, I strongly recommend that you have it checked and repaired by a specialist garage. Even if you're pretty good with cars, it's a pretty complex thing. Hopefully I've been able to help a little and please give us an update if you know more. Would be really interested to know what the final outcome is. All the best and safe driving!

Thanks, your answer has definitely helped me to think in the right direction! I will definitely have it checked by a specialist garage. Although I love dealing with cars, I don't want to take any chances, especially when it comes to areas as complex as the transmission control unit. I will keep you posted as soon as I have more information. Thanks again for your advice and help!
