Acceleration problems and excessive fuel consumption with BMW Z4 2014: looking for advice and experience

Hello everyone, I'm a bit worried about my 2014 BMW Z4, petrol engine, with a good 128,741km on the clock. When accelerating, it no longer pulls away properly, jerks and leaves behind black smoke. It also takes longer to start when cold and consumes much more fuel than usual. The exhaust warning light comes on and it smells very strongly of exhaust fumes. I think that the problem could be to do with the mixture control and that my petrol engine may be running too rich. Has anyone had any experience with similar problems and can give me a tip on what exactly I should tell my mechanic? I wasn't so happy with my last garage. Thanks in advance!

Hi mate, I had similar symptoms with my 2017 BMW X5 last time. Jerking when accelerating, more fuel consumption and black smoke. Plus, it also smelled like exhaust fumes. Turns out there was a serious problem with my fuel pump. After the mechanic replaced it, the car was running like a champ again. It could also be that your lambda sensor is faulty. This can, for example, cause the mixture control to get mixed up and your car gets too much or too little fuel. I would ask your mechanic to check this first. Good luck with that!

Hey, thanks for your input! Your description actually sounds pretty similar. Do you remember how much the repair cost you? And have you noticed any other problems with your car since then? Thanks again for your help!

Hey, I'm glad I was able to help. So, to answer your questions: The repair cost €375.00, as the lambda sensor was defective and had to be replaced. It wasn't cheap, but it definitely solved the problem with the mixture control. Since then, the car has been running like a kitten and is really pulling away again. And best of all, the jerking is gone, as is the problem with the spraying fuel and the exhaust smell. So, I can say that since the visit to the mechanic, the problems have been solved and my BMW drives like new again. Hope this helps you!

Hey, that's pretty good news, thanks a lot! I'm kind of relieved to have a clue. I'll go to my mechanic now and have the lambda sensor checked. If the price of the repair is similar, I'm sure I can cope with it. And if it brings the performance and consumption back to normal, it's definitely worth it. I hope it goes as well as it did for you. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted on the results. Bye!
