Acceleration and performance concerns - possible defects in the 2018 Ford Focus

Stalling while idling

Hi guys, my 2018 Ford Focus petrol engine with 104,319 km mileage is causing me a lot of trouble. When accelerating, the exhaust smokes black, the check engine light is on and the performance is totally down. The engine runs unevenly, jerks when accelerating and often fails to start immediately. When refueling, I notice that I get fewer kilometers and when stopped at traffic lights or in traffic jams, the car often simply stalls or vibrates extremely. After the last rather mediocre experience at the garage, I feared that it could be due to a defective ignition coil or misfiring. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me tips on how I could address this during my next visit to the mechanic? Thanks in advance!

Hi, have you ever had problems with the engine control unit? I had similar symptoms with my 2015 Ford Fiesta and it turned out that the engine control unit was faulty. The rough engine running, black smoke, loss of power and these general starting problems were all symptoms I had too. After they replaced the control unit, everything ran like clockwork again. The whole thing was a serious problem because the car was almost impossible to drive and it's also quite important for the function of your engine. I can't give you a specific price, but to be honest, the money for it did swallow me up a bit. So I recommend you check it out at your next garage visit.

Hey, thanks for your contribution! Your description sounds really similar to my problem. I didn't know about the engine control unit, it's definitely something I'll bring up with the mechanic. On the other hand, can you remember how much you had in repair costs? And have you noticed anything new since the repair? Thanks in advance!

Sure, I'm glad if I can help! So, to repair the engine control unit, I put a hefty €1000 on the table. It was a bit of a pain in the wallet, but the car is now running like a kitten again. As far as the ignition coil or misfiring is concerned, there really was something to it. The mechanic fixed it on my last visit though and there have been no problems since. So I would say definitely address that as well - maybe it has something to do with you. Good luck and I hope your Ford is fit again soon!

That's a lot of money. But you're right, if the car runs well again afterwards, it's worth it. So I will definitely talk to the mechanic about the engine control unit and the ignition coil. I just hope that the repair won't be too expensive. Thanks again for the helpful information, it will make it easier for me to communicate with the mechanic. Hopefully my Ford will be back on the road soon!
