ABS & Brake Light Issues: Infiniti JX Fix Needed

ABS warning light

|

Brake light not working

Hey all, I'm having issues with my 2012 Infiniti JX Hybrid. The ABS warning light keeps coming on and the brake lights aren't working. I suspect it might be a faulty brake light switch. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would like to know what repairs were done and how your mechanic fixed it. Any advice would help!

Hey there! I had almost the exact same issue with my 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid (pretty much the successor to the JX). I have some experience working on cars, mostly basic maintenance stuff. The symptoms were identical ABS light and dead brake lights. Turned out I just hadn't closed the trunk all the way! The partially open trunk was messing with the electrical system. Once I firmly shut it, everything went back to normal. No repair needed, thank goodness! Before you take it to a shop, could you check if your trunk is properly closed? Also, what exactly happens when you press the brake pedal? Does the ABS light flicker or stay constant? This info would help narrow things down. I've also got a Q50 in the family, and these Infinitis can be a bit finicky with their sensors sometimes.

Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah, I checked the trunk it's completely shut. In my case, when I press the brake pedal, the ABS light stays solid and doesn't flicker at all. My ride's at 14812 KM and had its last service about 2 months ago. The weird thing is, this started happening right after I got caught in heavy rain last week. I'm wondering if water got into something it shouldn't have? Definitely feels electrical, but I'd rather get some opinions before heading to the shop and dropping a bunch of cash on diagnostics.

Hey again! Yeah, that rain detail you mentioned definitely rings a bell sounds different from my initial trunk issue. Actually, after your comment about the rain, I remembered another incident with my QX60 about a year ago that was pretty similar. The ABS light came on after a major downpour, and like yours, my brake lights were acting up. In my case, water had gotten into the brake light switch connector under the dash, near the brake pedal. It caused some corrosion and messed with the signals. My mechanic cleaned the connector, applied some dielectric grease, and that fixed it. Total repair was way cheaper than I expected around 150€ including labor. Since your JX is pretty similar to my QX60, might be worth checking that area. You can actually take a look yourself there's a connector right above the brake pedal. If you see any green stuff or white crusty residue, that's probably your culprit. The solid ABS light (not flickering) is exactly what I experienced too. These Infiniti hybrids can be super sensitive to electrical issues, especially around the brake system. Let me know if you want me to snap a picture of where that connector is on mine might help you locate it on yours!

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! That definitely sounds like it could be my issue, especially since the timing with the rain makes perfect sense. I just took a quick look at the connector you mentioned and, sure enough, there's some whitish buildup there. Can't believe I might've gotten worked up over something this straightforward! I'll try to get it into my local shop tomorrow hopefully it'll be a quick and cheap fix like yours was. Really appreciate you sharing your experience and walking me through this. Saved me from stressing out too much over what might've just been some corroded connections. I'll update once I get it sorted!
