ABS & Airbag Issues: JX Hybrid Steering Sensor Mystery

Airbag warning light

|

ABS/DSC system is not working

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone, having some weird issues with my 2013 Infiniti JX Hybrid. The ABS and DSC aren't functioning, airbag light is on, and I'm getting fault codes. I suspect it might be related to the steering angle sensor communication, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to know what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Looking for real experiences here to help diagnose this correctly. Thanks!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid (pretty much the successor to the JX). I have some experience working on cars, and when this happened to me last year, multiple warning lights came on including ABS and airbag. Took it to my trusted workshop, and it turned out to be a faulty cable connection to one of the sensors. The mechanic found that the wiring harness near the steering column was damaged, causing communication issues. Got it fixed for about 155€, and all the warning lights disappeared. What's your mileage and have you noticed any other symptoms? Like steering feeling different or any unusual noises? Let me know might help figure out if it's the same issue. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing that experience! My JX has 182884 KM on it, and I just had it serviced last month. I haven't noticed any strange noises, but the steering does feel a bit different like it's slightly stiffer than usual. Your wiring harness issue sounds similar to what I might be dealing with. Did your mechanic mention any specific diagnostic steps they took to pinpoint the problem? Would be really helpful to know before I take it in.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the stiffer steering that's exactly how mine felt! The mileage is pretty similar too, mine was around 175000 KM when this happened. So when I took it in, my mechanic first hooked it up to their diagnostic computer (they use a proper Infiniti-compatible one, not just a basic OBD reader). They traced the communication errors between the steering angle sensor and the car's computer systems. The diagnostic showed intermittent signal losses, which is what tipped them off to check the wiring. The tricky part was actually finding the exact spot where the wiring was damaged it was kind of hidden behind some trim pieces. They had to remove part of the steering column cover to get to it. Once they saw it, it was pretty obvious the insulation was worn through in one spot where the wires flex when you turn the steering wheel. If your symptoms are this similar to what I experienced, I'd bet you're dealing with the same thing. Just make sure whoever looks at it knows their way around Infiniti electrical systems these hybrids can be a bit finicky with electrical issues. Let me know how it goes! Always curious to hear if others have the same fix work for them.

Thanks so much for all the detailed information! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll definitely make sure to mention the wiring harness possibility when I take it in tomorrow. I've got a good Infiniti specialist nearby who should be able to handle this. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain the diagnostic process it'll help me understand what they're doing and make sure they're on the right track. I'll post an update once I get it sorted out, in case anyone else runs into the same problem with their JX. Thanks again for your help!
