Thanks for the detailed response. Since my last service at 80000 KM, these symptoms have gradually worsened. The engine light started flashing just yesterday. Running a scan showed P0401 error code related to the intake system. The clicking sound you mentioned is definitely there, especially noticeable during cold starts. The repair cost estimate seems reasonable given the scope of work. Will book a workshop appointment this week to get the intake manifold issue sorted before it causes more engine performance problems.

Thanks for the follow-up. The P0401 code and clicking sound during cold starts definitely confirm our initial suspicion of the intake manifold flap control issue. In my case, delaying the repair led to increased engine stress and eventually affected the EGR system, making the final repair more costly at around 750 Euro. The flashing check engine light suggests the airflow control problem is now causing serious engine misfire events. From my experience, the intake system malfunction can quickly escalate from just rough running to potential engine damage if left unaddressed. After my repair was completed, these improvements were immediate: Engine power returned to normal, Fuel consumption dropped back to standard levels, Hissing noise completely disappeared, Smooth acceleration restored Make sure the workshop performs a thorough check of the entire intake system, not just the flap control unit. In my repair, they discovered slight carbon buildup that was contributing to the flap malfunction. Good decision getting it fixed promptly, this prevents the kind of cascading issues I encountered by waiting too long.

Thanks for the advice. Just got back from the workshop where they confirmed the intake manifold problems. The mechanic found both a faulty airflow control actuator and significant carbon deposits affecting the manifold flaps. The total repair came to 680 Euro, including a complete intake system cleaning and new control unit. The clicking noise is now gone and the engine runs perfectly smooth again. Fuel consumption has already dropped noticeably on my drive home. Really glad I didn't wait longer, the mechanic showed me how the carbon buildup was starting to affect other engine components. They also recommended regular intake system cleaning every 40000 KM to prevent future issues with the manifold flaps. Definitely learned my lesson about addressing these air intake problems early before they escalate into bigger repairs. Looking forward to many more trouble-free kilometers now that the intake system is properly serviced. Thanks again for helping diagnose the issue correctly.

Having some experience with diesel engine repairs, I encountered a very similar issue with my A6 2.7 TDI from nearly the same production period. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, especially the engine performance issues and that characteristic hissing sound. The intake manifold flap control system was indeed the culprit. After diagnosing, my workshop found a defective manifold flap actuator causing improper air distribution, leading to engine misfire and reduced power. The complete repair, including parts and labor, cost me 465 Euro. The repair process involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal of intake manifold assembly, Replacement of faulty actuator and control unit, System recalibration, Final testing Before spending money on repairs, you might want to listen for clicking sounds from the intake system while the engine is running, this can indicate stuck or malfunctioning flaps. To provide more specific guidance, could you share: Your exact model year, Current mileage, Any error codes showing, Whether the check engine light is on, When the symptoms first appeared This information would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced and whether the same fix would apply.
