A2 Diesel Turbo Failure: Symptoms and Solutions Ahead

Loss of engine power

Loud hissing on acceleration

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Whistling noise

Longer cold start time

Stalling while idling

My A2 diesel from 2000 shows severe performance issues along with strange noises. The check engine light is on, and the engine barely produces power. When idling, it often stalls, and fuel consumption has increased significantly. I notice a whistling sound during normal driving and loud hissing under acceleration. I suspect the turbocharger or boost pressure system might be failing since the symptoms point in that direction. The turbo lag is noticeable, and the engine feels very sluggish. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did it end up being, and what was the repair cost? Looking specifically for feedback from those who have had this fixed at a workshop.

Had almost identical issues with an A3 diesel from 2002. With some experience working on turbo systems, these symptoms immediately point to boost pressure problems. My car showed the same issues: poor performance, whistling, and that typical hissing under load. The turbo lag was getting worse by the day. After checking with a diagnostic tool, the boost pressure readings were way off normal specs. Took it to a workshop where they found a defective wastegate valve. The wastegate wasnt regulating the exhaust flow properly, causing inconsistent boost pressure and affecting the entire turbo system. They also inspected the pressure sensor and intercooler connections just to be thorough. The complete repair, including parts and labor, came to 860 Euro. Since the fix, the engine runs perfectly, no more strange noises, normal fuel consumption, and proper power delivery. Before suggesting specific repairs for your case, could you share: Current mileage, Any recent repairs, Whether the check engine light shows constant or intermittent, If you notice the issues more during cold starts or when engine is warm, Any diagnostic codes if you have them This would help narrow down if your issue is similar to what I experienced with my wastegate problem.

Thanks for the insights on the wastegate issue. For reference, my mileage is 135819 KM and last service was done 3 months ago where they changed oil and filters. The check engine light stays constantly on. I managed to get a diagnostic scan yesterday which showed error codes related to boost pressure control. The issues seem worse during cold starts, but the turbo lag and power loss remain noticeable even after warm-up. Would the 860 Euro repair cost you mentioned typically include a full pressure sensor check and turbocharger inspection? The whistling noise has me particularly concerned about potential turbo damage beyond just the wastegate.

Thanks for providing those details. My repair experience might be relevant here since our cars are from the same era and showing identical symptoms. The 860 Euro repair on my A3 actually included a complete turbocharger system inspection. The workshop did a thorough check of all boost-related components: MAP sensor testing, Full turbocharger inspection, Wastegate actuator check and replacement, Boost control solenoid verification, All hose connections and clamps The constant check engine light and cold start issues you describe match exactly what I experienced. The diagnostic codes pointing to boost pressure problems further confirm the similarity to my case. The whistling noise you mention worried me too, but in my case, it was mainly caused by the faulty wastegate allowing incorrect exhaust flow through the turbocharger. The mechanic found no actual damage to the turbo itself, which saved significant costs. Based on your mileage and symptoms, I would strongly recommend getting the full system checked rather than just replacing individual parts. My turbo lag issues disappeared completely after the comprehensive repair, and fuel consumption returned to normal. Worth noting: The workshop might offer a pressure leak test, which would definitively show if your turbocharger needs replacement or if the wastegate repair alone would suffice.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of your similar repair experience. Your thorough breakdown of the inspection process and costs really helps put my mind at ease about getting this fixed. Given that my symptoms match yours so closely, especially the boost pressure issues and error codes, I will definitely have the full system inspected. The 860 Euro cost seems reasonable for such a comprehensive check and repair. I will contact a workshop tomorrow to schedule the inspection, making sure they check all the components you mentioned, particularly the wastegate and pressure sensor setup. Good to know the whistling might just be related to the wastegate rather than major turbo damage. Will update once I get the diagnosis, but based on the matching symptoms and similar vehicle age, I suspect you are right about the wastegate being the primary culprit. The check engine light and cold start problems really do sound identical to what you experienced.
