2022 Volvo XC90 Diesel: Signs of a Possible Blocked DPF and Seeking Assistance

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

Hey folks! I'm having a bit of a worry with my 2022 Volvo XC90 Diesel, with about 25,726 KM clocked on her. Lately, I've got black smoke coming out on acceleration, my check engine light's been stubbornly on, there seems to be a power loss, and the usual DPF regeneration isn't happening. Top it off, exhaust's smell is stronger than my Grandpa's old socks! I got a feeling that the Diesel particulate filter (DPF) might be seriously choked up. Last time I dealt with a mechanic, let's just say it didn't go that well. So before I dive headfirst into that mess again, I thought I'd check here first. Anyone faced similar issues with their ride? How did you handle it, especially at the mechanic's? Any help's much appreciated, cheers!

Hey there, Sure thing! I had something similar with my 2019 Volvo XC60 Diesel, so I get your worries. I remember the thick black smoke and that pesky check engine light that wouldn't leave me alone. The power loss was also a major drag. Just as you speculated, turned out the DPF was the culprit. The darn thing was as clogged as the kitchen sink after my wife's culinary experiments. Due to the high mileage I had on mine, the DPF was unable to regenerate itself as per usual. Like most things, they don't last forever, you know? Managed to get it to a garage I trust, and they confirmed my suspicions. Had to get the DPF cleaned out thoroughly, and in some parts replacement was needed. It was a bit of a serious issue, not a walk in the park, but luckily it was manageable. Remember, friend, a proactive approach will save you a lot of hassle down the line. So don't drag your feet with this, especially if you notice a stronger exhaust smell and poor performance. It's best to get it sorted before it escalates into something more serious. Good luck with it, cheers!

Hey there, Wow, glad it worked out for you with your XC60! That experience sounds nerve-wracking, to say the least. I have a similar fear with my 2022 Volvo XC90 Diesel. It's troubling to think about the DPF replacement and getting it all cleaned up, but as you said, better sooner than later. I hate to bring up the money matter, but do you remember around how much it set you back? Also, I’m curious, has anything else popped up related to the DPF since you got it fixed? Thanks a ton for your help and sharing your experience. Cheers!

Hey there! Yeah, the whole situation with the DPF was indeed a nerves game, but managed to get through it just fine. About your query on the cash issue, I understand, worries about the pocket can't be avoided! So, the cost of dealing with that clogged beast came to around 1550€. Yup, it was indeed a hefty sum, but fixing the DPF was crucial, particularly keeping in mind the high mileage I had piled on my trusty ol' XC60 Diesel. Ever since the mechanic worked on it, the DPF's working better than a whistle. No more aggravating black smoke or that darned check engine light. The power's back, and that's a sweet relief! As for the exhaust smell, I no longer risk turning into a walking air freshener. So, taking on those massive costs eventually paid off for me. Hope this settles your worries a bit and helps you make an informed decision. Wishing luck on sorting it all out. Cheers!

Hey! That's relieving to know your XC60 is running fine after the fix, gives me some hope for my XC90. Thanks for letting me know about the cost, gotta prepare myself for the possible blow to my wallet. But it seems like it's worth it in the long run for the health of the car and avoiding more issues further down the road. I think I've got no choice but to bite the bullet and take my ride in for a proper diagnostic. Got to keep her rolling smoothly for more miles to come. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Appreciate your help in making this decision a bit easier. Safe driving, cheers!
