2021 Diesel Volvo S90: Black Smoke, Check Engine Light Issues, and DPF Regeneration Concerns

Unsteady engine

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hey folks, Been having a bit of a rough ride with my 2021 Diesel Volvo S90. She's done 12360 KM, and lately, she's puffing out black smoke when I speed up, the check engine light keeps busting my chops, engine power's taken a nosedive, and she runs about as smooth as gravel. I can't even get the DPF to regenerate, and she's guzzling diesel like no man's business. I suspect it might be something to do with some low differential pressure in the diesel particulate filter. Have any of you guys had similar troubles with your rides? And how'd your local mechanic tackle it? Last time I took mine in, it wasn't the best experience, so trying to save myself another headache. Cheers!

Hey, Sounds like we're in the same boat - the same thing happened to my 2018 Diesel Volvo V90. Smoke, poor engine power, drinking diesel like crazy... felt like I was driving a tractor, not a Volvo, seriously. It ended up being an issue with the Exhaust Back Pressure (EBP) sensor, like you suggested. It wasn't reading the pressure correctly, which caused the DPF to malfunction and couldn't regenerate properly. That was probably why your car was consuming more diesel and blowing out black smoke as the unburnt fuel was expelled. It wasn't a bed of roses at the garage. It took some time for the mechanic to diagnose that the EBP sensor was the culprit. After confirming, it needed to be replaced outright. Thankfully, it wasn't considered a serious issue like engine or transmission damage. After the replacement, everything was back to normal. Remember to ask your mechanic to clean the DPF thoroughly as well after replacing the sensor. The accumulated soot in the DPF may also affect its functioning. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hey there, Sounds like quite the ordeal with your V90, feel your pain bro. The EBP sensor does seem like a good starting point for my S90 issue - fingers crossed that's all it is. Just wondering, do you remember how much you had to drop on the entire fix, including the new sensor and the DPF cleaning? And have you seen any other weird stuff happen with your ride since the fix? Thanks for your help, really appreciate it!

Hey, yeah, it was a bit of a rollercoaster with my V90, but we got there in the end. For my little adventure, I put down about 250€ to swap out that dodgy EBP sensor, and they threw in the DPF clean with that. Since I've had that sorted, I haven't seen any other strange shenanigans with my ride, especially that low differential pressure in the diesel particulate filter has been properly sorted. It's been running like a dream, not guzzling diesel that much, and thankfully, the smoke show's over! Hope your S90's journey to recovery is a smooth one. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Hey there, Well, I'm glad to hear it all worked out for your V90. Sounds like a thrill ride, but it also sounds like it was worth it in the end. A price of €250 doesn't sound too steep considered the whole package. Being car smoke-free again must be a relief! Thanks heaps for all the heads up - I'm actually feeling a bit more optimistic about getting my S90 sorted. Now it's time for us to cross the bridge, due for a visit to my local mechanic this Friday. Let's hope, good times are ahead, and my diesel guzzler puts a full stop to her drinking habit! Thanks again. Really helpful. Cheers!
