2020 Hyundai Palisade Diesel: Unexplained Power Loss, shaky Idling and Persistent Exhaust Smell

Strong exhaust smell

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey everyone, hoping for some help here. I've got a 2020 Hyundai Palisade Diesel with around 22,380 KM on it and it's acting up recently. The check engine light pops on, the engine has been shutting down unusually, feels like it's lost power and idles shaky, plus there's a pungent exhaust smell too. I suspect it might be the EGR valve, but not 100% sure. Any of you experienced something similar? And how did your mechanic handle it? My last visit to the garage wasn't that great. So, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, Your guess might be spot on. Your car's symptoms send me down the memory lane to my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel. It had around the same KM on the clock when it started behaving quite similar - the check engine light was the first red flag, followed by an erratic engine behavior. Turns out, it was indeed the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve messing up. The EGR valve essentially helps your car burn fuel more efficiently by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. So, to bring things back to normal, the mechanic at my local garage cleaned the EGR valve thoroughly first, as these can often get clogged with soot, especially in diesel cars. However, it didn't do the trick. Thus, a replacement was the only option left. It's not something you can ignore, as a faulty EGR valve can just add up to more engine issues down the line, but don't worry it's a fairly common issue. From my experience, ensure that your mechanic uses a premium, high-quality EGR valve for the replacement. Also, ask him to check the EGR system and clean it thoroughly to avoid future problems. Happy driving and hope your Palisade gets back to its best soon!

Oh, and by the way, do you recall roughly how much you had to pay for fixing your Santa Fe? Did anything else pop up since you sorted the EGR valve issue? Thanks!

Hi again, Yep, I remember it like it was yesterday. I had to shell out around 355.00 € to have the EGR valve issue sorted out. And since then, I've not experienced any similar issues or subsequent complications. After that fix, my Santa Fe has been running like a champ. Just make sure your mechanic gives your EGR system a thorough cleanup when replacing the valve, it could save you some future headaches. Don't stress out too much, these things happen and that's part and parcel of owning a vehicle! Crossing my fingers for your ride to get back on track smoothly and swiftly!

Thank you so much for your valuable insights,. It helps knowing what to expect, and it's reassuring to hear your Santa Fe bounced back without other issues. I'll make sure to mention your advice regarding the EGR system cleanup to my mechanic. Here's hoping things sort out swiftly and smoothly for my Palisade too! Keep safe and happy motoring!
