2019 Seat Tarraco Engine Issues: Oil Light, Strange Noises, and Metal Shavings in Oil

Oil light on

Metal shavings in oil

Weird engine noise

Valve adjustment noise

Hey folks, I'm having some trouble with my 2019 Seat Tarraco (gasoline engine, around 134,774 km on the clock). Seeing the oil light flicker on, hearing this weird valve adjustment noise, dealing with strange engine sounds and finding metal shavings in my oil. I reckon these symptoms might point to an issue with the engine oil pressure system, what do you reckon? Had a less than stellar experience with my mechanic last time, so I could use your advice. Anyone else experienced something similar? What did your mechanic end up doing about it? Cheers!

Hey, Your symptoms sound precisely like what I experienced with my 2016 Seat Leon - same issue with the engine oil pressure. The oil light flickered on accompanied by odd engine noises and guess what, metal shavings in my oil too...just like what you described! Turns out, it was an oil pump defect. Quite a serious one I'd say. It's responsible for preventing the bearings from seizing up and helps everything run smoothly. Those metal shavings were a sign of damage due to the inadequate oil pressure. What my mechanic did about it was replacing the defective oil pump with a new one. It involved draining the oil, removing the oil pan, and replacing the pump. They also cleaned out the oil system to get rid of those metal shavings. After that, the engine sounds were back to normal and the oil light stopped flickering on and off. In short, yes, I think it's an oil pump issue, and it's something you should have looked at promptly. A defective oil pump is no small matter. Hope this helps!

Hey there, Wow, it surely sounds like a déjà vu of what happened with your Seat Leon! Thanks for hashing out the suspected oil pump problem. No doubt, it seems to match the symptoms I'm facing with my Tarraco. They're uncannily similar down to the T! If you don't mind me asking, how much did the oil pump replacement set you back? I'm trying to get an estimate so that I don't get taken for a ride by another scrupulous mechanic. And also, has anything else popped up since you got it fixed? Want to know if this issue's behind me once I get it repaired. Cheers in advance!

Hey, No worries at all! So I shelled out €755 for the whole shebang, and that covered the replacement of the defective oil pump. So basically, the cost includes draining and refilling the oil, removing the oil pan, replacing the oil pump, and cleaning out the system to get those pesky metal shavings out. Kind of a relief given how key the oil pump is for the smooth running of the engine. And to answer your other question - since I got it sorted, the ol' Leon is running like a dream again! The oil light has behaved itself and there's no repeat of those strange sounds or any of the previous drama. So I'd say that once you sort this out, it's likely you'll put this issue squarely behind you. Good luck with it!

Hey thanks a bunch for all the insights,! Your explanation about the oil pump defect and your experience with it have been super helpful. What a relief to hear that your Leon is doing great post-repair. €755 seems a decent price, given the nature of the problem. Hopefully, I'll be similarly lucky and won't find any additional hitches once the oil pump issue is sorted! Now, I guess I'm prepared to face my mechanic confidently. Seriously, I appreciate you taking the time to share all this. Cheers and ride safe!
