2019 Nissan Navara: Experiencing Black Smoke Emission and Persistent Check Engine Light

Poor fuel economy

|

Check engine light on

|

Loss of engine power

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Unsteady engine

|

DPF regeneration failure

Hey folks, I've got a bit of a puzzler with my 2019 Nissan Navara, Diesel-powered and just passing the 11502 km mark. Recently, she's been letting out black smoke when I hit the gas and the check engine light won't quit. Even feels like she's losing her get up and go, engine running rougher than a bear's behind. Fuel economy is shot and the DPF keeps failing on regen. I've had a rough go with mechanics last time, suspect it might be related to a faulty exhaust gas back pressure sensor on the diesel particulate filter. Anyone had similar woes? What was your experience when bringing it in for a fix? Cheers for your insights!

Hey, Had a quite similar issue with my 2016 Nissan Qashqai a while back. Diesel, just like yours, had clocked quite the kilometres too. She started giving off black smoke and the engine began to stutter, right nasty situation. Seems right familiar with what you're going through. In my case, you hit the nail on the head, it was the diesel particulate filter (DPF) giving me a headache. The thing was completely loaded up and wasn't doing a proper job on the regen, much like yours it seems. I had some suspicions about it, same as you. Took her into a garage, they found that the exhaust gas back pressure sensor on the DPF was on the fritz, causing the DPF to load up. There you go, you might be onto something with your hunch. Long story short, they replaced the faulty sensor and gave the DPF a proper clean. It was indeed a bit serious issue, as it does have a direct impact on the performance of the car. The ride has been pretty smooth after the fix, the black smoke and stuttering vanished. Hope this helps you out! Remember to take it to a trustworthy mechanic though, don't want to end up in another rough spot. Keep us posted on your situation.

Appreciate the insight! Your scenario does sound spot on with what I'm going through with my Navara. Glad to hear your Qashqai is running smoother after sorting the DPF and that dodgy sensor. Just out of curiosity, do you recall how much you forked out for that fix? And has anything else cropped up related to that since then? Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Hey there, You bet, happy to help you! So, let's talk about the money part. Didn't precisely try to engrave it in my memory, but hey, you don't forget a hit like that in a hurry. The total damage to my wallet was around 1325€. Ouch, I know, but it was worth it in the end, I reckon. As for any pesky problems happening again related to the DPF or the back pressure sensor, touch wood, all's been fine and dandy since then. Since the mechanic sorted it out, the exhaust gas back pressure sensor error on the DPF has been behaving, no more crude smoke, stuttering, or limping along issues, just pure smooth sailing with the Nissan. Made me think it was worth the investment, the old girl's back in shape and no recurring nightmares. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way! Keep us updated on how it goes with your Navara, eh? Good luck!

Ouch indeed, that's quite the figure! But sounds like it was worth forking out to get your girl back in shape and purring like a kitten. I'd rather invest in a proper repair now than face bigger pains down the track. I'll definitely take your advice and get my Navara checked out pronto. Here's hoping I'll have as smooth sailing as you're having post-fix. Will make sure to update you guys on the progress. Thanks again, for your advice. Much appreciated! Cheers!
