2017 Lexus IS Hybrid Exhibiting Black Smoke, Engine Warning Light and Performance Issues at 30,871 KM: Potential Air Mass Sensor Fault?

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Stalling while idling

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey! I'm driving a 2017 Lexus IS Hybrid and recently it's been acting up with around 30871 KM on the odometer. Symptoms include black smoke on acceleration, a lit engine warning, a power-losing, self-shutting engine and shaky, jerky movements. Fuel economy's gone downhill as well and it stalls and shakes when idling. I suspect an issue with the air mass sensor but I'd love to hear similar experiences. Did you have to face such troubles? And how was your mechanic/dealership experience post the encounter? Thanks in advance!

Hey! I drive a 2014 Lexus GS Hybrid and I had similar symptoms a while back. The main culprit was indeed the mass air flow sensor. It was constantly causing me headaches: my engine light was always lit, had poor acceleration, and miserable fuel economy, plus the shakes when idling. It's like the car had a bad case of the chills or something. Last time I took it to the garage, they confirmed it was an issue with the MAF sensor too. They had to replace the whole thing, clean the intake air system, and reset the engine light. Once it was done, it was like night and day. The car ran smooth again, no more jerky movements, drop in power, and the black smoke was gone. So, yeah, while it was a serious issue affecting the performance and fuel efficiency of the car, it was fixed without too much fuss once diagnosed correctly. So, I'd say get your car checked sooner rather than later. Hope this helps!

Hey, your experience sounds strikingly similar to mine! these MAF sensor issues can really throw you for a loop. Unpleasant business, this. You mentioned the garage took care of a whole bunch of things - replacing the sensor, cleaning the intake air system, and resetting that pesky engine light. Do you recall how much that little adventure cost you, ballpark? Did anything else go haywire since the fix? Fingers crossed I can nip this in the before it gets too costly or complicated. Cheers for all the details. Really appreciate it!

Hey, you're right—it was an unpleasant bit of business indeed! As for the cost, I had to part with around €415 to get that MAF sensor issue sorted. It wasn't exactly a walk in the park to shell out that amount, but honestly, it was worth every penny to get my ride back in shape. And yes, since the mechanic did their magic, the Lexus is back to its smooth running self. No more engine warning light, no shaky behavior, and the fuel economy is back to being brilliant again. So far, it seems like that fix nailed it and I haven't run into any other issues—touch wood. My advice to you would be to take your car in and get that air mass sensor checked out ASAP. You don't want to let this drag on for too long. Hope this info helps you out and good luck!

Hey, €415, huh? That's a bit of a sting to the wallet but hey, if it gets my faithful Lexus back in shape, I guess it's worth it. Relieved to hear that your car's been going strong with no further hitches post the repair. So, the next stop is the mechanic shop for my stubborn ride. Just praying don't have to part with too many €€s but yeah got to do what you gotta do. Thanks a ton for your detailed info and advice. It has been really helpful. Here's to hoping things get sorted for me as well without any more problems. Cheers!
