2010 Seat Altea Diesel Experiencing Intermittent Engine Issues and Startup Failure

Check engine light on

Hey! I've got a bit of a pickle with my 2010 Seat Altea Diesel here. It's clocked quite a few miles (214785KM, to be precise) and I've been having some weird issues lately - Check engine light pops on and off, the engine randomly gives up the ghost, and sometimes it just flat out refuses to start. Had a fault stored too. After a previous sketchy experience with my mechanic, I'm starting to suspect these problems could be down to incorrect coding, but I'm definitely not an expert here. Anyone had something similar happen to them? How did your mechanic handle it? Appreciate your advice before I dive back down the mechanic rabbit hole again.

Hey there, Well, I can relate to your situation. I faced a similar situation with my 2013 Seat Leon Diesel, almost ended up banging my head on the wall. Turned out, it was indeed an issue with my third-party chip tuning. After numerous incident of unusual failures, check engine lights and non-starts, I took it to my local mechanic. The diagnosis showed that the chip tuning was messing up the engine management system resulting in unusual engine cuts and no starts. It was quite a serious issue, needed an immediate fix. The mechanic had to reset to the default map, erase the faulty coding and then reprogram the ECU. They also went as far as checking other components to make sure no other parts were affected. It was a bit of a chore, but it's running like a dream since then. So, it might be worth you getting the chip tuning checked and having your ECU looked at. Getting things back to factory settings can make a whole lot of difference. Hope that helps!

Hey you had me sweating with your experience. Not gonna lie, it does sound a lot like what I'm dealing with - my Seat Altea's been a right nuisance. Maybe it's time I checked the chip tuning too, the last thing I need is for it to blow a gasket or something. Quick question though, do you remember how much the whole tuning-cleanup set you back? I need to know if I gotta start tightening up my budget. And has anything else popped up since you got the tuning sorted? Cheers!

Yo! Just reading about your Seat Altea's troubles is giving me flashbacks. Good times, eh? You're right to think about getting your chip tuning checked. It definitely saved my Leon, I'll tell you that. In terms of cost, it set me back a pretty penny, around 180.0€ specifically. I know it hurts the pocket, but trust me, it's cheaper than a full engine replacement. No? And since I got it sorted by my mechanic, she's been running like a well-oiled machine. No more unusual failures, no more check engine scares, and certainly no more inexplicably stubborn starts. Seriously, it was like night and day after they wiped that faulty coding. So, tight budget or not, I'd say it's worth it. Safe driving to you!

Hey! Thanks for filling me in. Your story reminded me that prevention is less traumatizing, and a hell of a lot cheaper, than cure - I'd rather fork out the 180.0€ than have to deal with a full-blown engine replacement! Sounds like the diagnosis and fix really did the trick for your Leon. Fingers crossed it does the same for my Altea. Guess I'll be paying a visit to my mechanic after all. Here's to hoping for smooth cruises and quieter mornings. Drive safe!
