2008 Lexus LX Diesel Overheating: Possible Cooling Air Flap Issue and Cost Inquiries

Overheating

Hey! I'm having a bit of an issue with my 2008 Lexus LX Diesel (mileage: 161,004KM). She's been overheating lately and it's got me concerned. I reckon it might have something to do with the cooling air flap system screwing up. Last mechanic trip was a disaster so, I really don't want to rush back there. Any of you car savvies experienced something similar? How did you guys fare with your mechanic and what was the cost like? Cheers for any input!

Hey there! I totally understand the frustration. Here's the deal - I had a similar trouble with my 2010 Lexus LX. Just like yours, it had some unprecedented overheating issues. Turns out, it was the radiator shutter wiring harness. It was defective, hidden right behind the bumper just like you suspected. That's one sneaky troublemaker, I'll tell you that much. Thankfully, my last trip to the garage was pretty smooth. Had to wait a bit, but my mechanic did a stellar job. They had to open up the front bumper assembly, remove some other parts to actually reach it. Then, they replaced the busted harness with a fresh one. It's not a common issue, but when it happens, it's a pain in the neck. Seems like a bothersome fix, but as long as your mechanic knows their stuff, your Lexus should be back to its prime in no time. Can't say much about the cost since you didn't want it, but it wasn't exactly an everyday, run-off-the-mill kind of repair. Good luck with your ride!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That does sound like what I'm dealing with - a sneaky little issue hidden behind the front bumper. Tad bit annoying but at least I've got a rough idea about what may be causing the problem. Look, without prying too much into your pockets, would you remember much about how deep did you have to dig for that fix? And since the repair, did any other issues pop up? Your two cents are greatly appreciated! Thanks and ride safe!

Hey! Ah, I see you're fishing for numbers now, aren't you? No worries we're all in the same boat. Safety first, but the wallet's health is a close second, right? Well, to fix that pesky radiator shutter wiring harness sitting coy behind the bumper, I shelled out around €270. Not theoretically a drop in the ocean, but well worth to keep my old girl running cool and smooth. Since the repair, she's been purring like a kitten. No more temper tantrums and threatening to set my eyebrows on fire with all that overheating. Looks like that trip to the mechanic saved the day, and more importantly, tamed that cooling air flap system malfunction. Sucks I had to go through it, but she's back to her old glory now. Hope that gives you some clarity. Let me know how it goes for your Lexus. Slap on some good tunes and enjoy that cool, headache-free ride when you've got her all sorted. Cheers and stay safe out there!

Oi, thanks for the ballpark figure! €270 doesn't sound too shabby compared to an exploded block or some other damage. I'm way more eased up now knowing it might be just the radiator shutter wiring harness causing the mischief behind the bumper. I reckon I'll take your advice and set up an appointment with my mechanic soon. Hopefully, she'll be up and running cool again. Can slip back into those smooth cruises with nary a worry, just like it should be. I'll drop an update once I've got things sorted. Until then, stay safe and keep the rubber on the road! Cheers for the help!
