2008 Fiat Stilo Gasoline Model Experiencing Sputtering, High Fuel Consumption and Unusual Shutdowns: Seeking Advice on Potential Crankcase Ventilation Issues

Jerking on acceleration

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Poor fuel economy

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of a predicament with my '08 Fiat Stilo running on gasoline. The beast's been sputtering, losing power, drinking fuel like mad, and randomly shuts down. The check engine light is also dancing on my dash and she jerks during acceleration. All this has me pulling my hair out! I'm guessing it could be a crankcase ventilation issue but I'd love to hear your thoughts. If anyone's had a similar issue with their whip and could shed some light on how their mechanic tackled it, I'd really appreciate the share. Cheers!

Hey there, So, I've had a similar issue with my '06 Fiat Bravo, and it sounds like you're bang on with your diagnosis. I'm no expert on cars, just a bloke with some experience from years of driving and basic maintenance. My Bravo was having the same symptoms and it turned out the crankcase ventilation was defective. High oil consumption, engine stalling, and crazy fuel intake were my first signs. I took it to my local workshop, and they confirmed the issue. The repair job was done there, where they replaced the crankcase breather and checked the entire system for any additional issues - ended up costing me right around 360 Euro. But let me ask you, is your Stilo manual or automatic? And have you noticed the issues getting worse over time or did it just suddenly start? Because this could help pinpoint the exact problem.

Hey, thanks for chiming in! Your insights are really helpful. Yes, my Fiat Stilo is a manual, and it's been progressively getting worse. First, I noticed the odd jerk while accelerating, and then the other symptoms started creeping in. Now that you've mentioned, the oil level seems to be dropping faster than usual too. I'm slightly relieved knowing that your repair didn't break the bank too much. With my Stilo hitting the 40526 km mileage recently, I was worried I'd be slammed with a painfully hefty repair. I guess it's time to pay my mechanic a visit and see if the same holds true for my ride. Hoping it's just the crankcase ventilation acting up. Anyhow, C’est la vie, right? Keep you posted! Cheers.

Hey, It sounds like we really are singing from the same hymnbook here. The progressive appearance of symptoms on your Stilo does mirror my experience. And yep, with your mileage, it's about the right time these issues started to surface in my Bravo too. Now, about that disappearing oil - it's another symptom of a faulty crankcase ventilation system. The increased oil consumption is often attributed to the problem causing the engine to operate in a low pressure setting which sucks more oil than needed into the combustion chamber. Just to give you a head's up, when I brought my Fiat into the workshop, they first performed a compression test to check if there were leaks in the engine that might result in these symptoms. It's sort of a diagnostic step before they confirmed the crankcase ventilation fault. And to my surprise, it was indeed, a crankcase ventilation fault. It's always daunting when your trusty ride starts acting up, but the good news is, if it's the same problem I had, the repair isn't too intensive or pricey. Keep your chin up and let's keep our fingers crossed that's the issue your mechanic finds. Await your updates. Good luck! Cheers!

Hey, reading your reply made me nod more than a dashboard bobble-head! It's like my Stilo read the same script as your Bravo. Thanks for giving me the heads-up on the compression test too, it's good to know what the first checks will be. I just hope my mechanic also finds the same crankcase ventilation fault as yours did because I can really do without an exorbitant repair bill. I'll definitely keep you in the loop on how things go. And hopefully, it's not more complicated than this. Fingers crossed! Cheers, and thanks again!
