Hey! I gotta say your problem sounds uncannily like what I went through with my '04 SC. Those grinding noises and erratic shifting were a nightmare! Good call on picking up on oil wear in the transfer case, I faced the exact same issue. Sounds like had a decent mechanic on their hands, lucky them! You definitely want someone well versed in this stuff to lay hands on your precious machine. By the way, do you remember what the damage to your wallet was when you got yours fixed? Also, any other issues cropping up since the fix? Always good to be prepared, as they say! Safe driving!
Hey! Actually, I was quite pleased with the repair costs, considering the gravity of the problem. It set me back only 210€ to fix that pesky worn gear oil issue in the transfer case. Worth every penny in my book, considering it put an end to all that erratic shifting and grinding noise. And since the visit to the mechanic, I haven't had any trouble with the transfer case oil wear. On that note, I totally agree with you you need a competent mechanic for this job. I got lucky with mine and hopefully, you'll get a good one as well. Best of luck! Stay safe on the roads 👍.
Thanks, guys! It's really comforting to see I'm not alone in this. Your replies give me reassurances about the diagnosis over the worn oil in the transfer case and it's refreshing to have some direction about where to take this next. I'll take your advice and will look for a competent mechanic for my dear SC's fix., kudos for sharing your cost - it doesn't sound as nastily expensive as I feared. Fingers crossed my experience might be similar. Safe travels to all of you. You guys are lifesavers! 🙏.
Hey there, sounds like you're having a pretty similar experience to what I faced with my 2009 Lexus LS. Transmission slipping, unusual shifting, those grinding noises, name it! First, props for nailing the diagnosis. It was indeed worn gear oil in the transfer case. It was a kinda serious issue for me cause it can potentially lead to serious transmission damage if left unchecked. But don't panic, it's manageable. Now, I must say the mechanics at my garage did a bang-up job. They needed to drain the old oil, then fill in fresh gear oil into the transfer case. There's also the checking and replacement of the oil filter if needed, on top of diagnosing if there were additional issues that led to the problem in the first place. Do yourself a favour and take your SC to a seasoned mechanic who knows what they're doing. Hope this helps. Stay safe on the road 👍.
