2006 Fiat Seicento: Check Engine Light, Speedometer Alert and Stored Fault - Possible Causes and Solutions

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Check engine light on

Fault stored

Hey everyone, I'm currently facing a bit of a pickle with my 2006 Fiat Seicento with about 135k km on the clock, running on petrol. Got a few worrisome warnings - my check engine light is on, there's an alert on my speedometer, and it's showing a stored fault. My hunch is this might be due to a faulty fuel filler flap position sensor but I ain't too sure. Had a bitter experience with my last mechanic so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before I approach another one. Anyone here faced similar issues? How did your mechanic handle it? Appreciate any advice or experience you guys can share. Cheers!

Hey there, so funny you should mention this! I also own a Fiat, mine's a 2003 Fiat Punto, and about 4 months back I had a similar nag. Y'know, engine light up, niggling warnings, and then my mechanic hit me with the talk of a faulty wiring harness for the fuel filler flap. Basically, what he told me was, this little beastie sends signals to the main computer about the flap's position. When it's out of whack, whole bunch of things can light up like your Christmas tree. The issue isn't as minor as it appears, for my car we had to replace the whole harness, not just a sensor. It’s nothing to panic about, but it's still crucial to take care of it before it could cause a cascade of other issues. So, worth getting a professional to have a look sooner rather than later. Hope that helps! Be sure to take it in soon-ish for a gander, do, don't rush it but also don't ignore it! Good luck.

Wow, thanks for the insight! Sounds like a rough gig, having to replace the entire harness, not just the sensor. Out of curiosity, do you remember roundabout how much you ended up shelling out for the repairs? Also, has it been smooth sailing since then or has any other issue popped up since taken care of the wiring problem? Trying to brace myself here for the potential expense and future adventures with my Fiat. Thanks again!

Hey, no problem at all! I hope it all gets sorted out for you. As for the cost, I paid about 155€ for the whole ordeal. That was for sorting out the dodgy fuel filler flap wiring harness. It sounds like a hefty bit of change but trust me, it's worth it in the long run to have it all working tickety-boo again. As for the whole experience post-repairs, it's actually been pretty chill. I haven't faced any notable boo-boos since the flap thing got fixed. It's been a smooth run, touch wood! I reckon seeing the mechanic helped big time, as things seem to be in good nick since I got it sorted. Remember, these things happen. Cars aren't perfect, they have their moments too, just like us! So, hang in there. Hoping it will be an easy fix for you. Keep us posted, yeah?

Thanks you've no idea how much your advice has calmed me down! It's a relief to know that it could be a one-time cost of 155€ rather than a parade of endless issues. Good to understand the post-repair picture as well. Seems like the mechanic you went to thoroughly sorted out things for you, and I’m hoping to find someone just as reliable. And you’re right, cars aren't perfect and they do throw tantrums, just like us humans, ha! But yeah, thanks again for the info truly helped me get my thoughts together. I’ll take your advice and get it to the mechanic soon without any delay. Don’t want my Fiat throwing any more surprises at me. Will keep you posted on what happens next. Here's hoping for a smooth run like yours post-repair. Cheers!
