2005 Lexus SC Overheating Issues and Check Engine Light: Possible Faulty Coolant Pump

Overheating

Check engine light on

Hey! I got a 2005 Lexus SC with a gasoline engine and 93694 on the clock. Lately, I've been dealing with overheating and my check engine light's come on. I'm pretty sure my coolant pump is on the fritz. A similar issue last time had me tangled with my mechanic, which wasn't great. So I'm reaching out here looking for some advice. Anyone here faced something like this before? How did your mechanic handle it? I'm trying to get a sense of what's common before I take it in. Cheers for any insights!

Hey there! Your situation sounds pretty similar to what happened with my 2008 Lexus GS a while back. I was having the same issue - overheating, coupled with a persistent check engine light. After a bit of back and forth with my mechanic, it turned out that the culprit was the cable connecting the coolant pump to the control unit - apparently it was defective and was messing with the coolant circulations. For my car, it turned out to be a bit of an involved job. The defective cable did need a replacement, of course, but the mechanic also had to get into the control unit to ensure nothing there was damaged or causing additional issues. It was a bit of a serious issue - I mean, it's not something you can ignore for long without risking a lot more damage to the engine because of overheating. Only bit of consolation was that once fixed, the car was back on track without any issues. Hopefully, you'll be able to sort it out as smoothly as well. Best of luck with it!

Hey! I appreciate the insight. Seems like I've really got something to deal with here. Just out of curiosity, do you recollect how much that repair set you back? And since you got it taken care of, anything else popped up or has your Lexus been cruising smoothly? Thanks again for the help!

Hey! Yeah, I remember the repair pretty clearly, actually. Fixing that cable connecting the coolant pump to the control unit ended up costing me around 220€. Not exactly pocket change, but hey, better than a fried engine, right? Plus, once it was sorted, it made a world of difference. Since the cable got replaced and the pump function was back to optimum, things have been nice and smooth. No more ticked off engine lights or overheating - basically, my Lexus has been running like a dream. Seems like the mechanic did a solid job on that one, so definitely worth every penny. Hope that helps and you get yours sorted out without too much hassle! Cheers!

Hey! That provides a bit of relief, knowing it worked out for you and wasn't ridiculously expensive. And I'm glad to hear your Lexus has been running well since. I'm hoping for a similar outcome over here. I'll take it into the mechanic soon and let's just hope for the best. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's given me a better idea of what to expect. Cheers!
