2004 Peugeot 406 Petrol Engine Cutting Out, ABS/DSC Issues, Dim Lights, and Weak Battery Questions; Seeking Mechanic Service Recommendations

Dim or flickering lights

ABS/DSC system is not working

Weak battery when starting the engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey! I've got a bit of a problem here I could use some help with. I'm currently dealing with a 2004 Peugeot 406, petrol engine, clocked about 321K km on it. Lately, the engine's started to cut out on me, the ABS/DSC is on the blink, and I'm dealing with dim/flickering lights. Not to mention, the battery feels weak when I'm trying to start up. I had a sour experience with a mechanic last time and that's sort of made me wary. I'm suspecting it could be an issue with the generator, but I'm not 100% certain. Has anyone faced something similar? What did your mechanic find out and how was their service? Just fishing for some insights before I take it in again. Thanks!

Hey there, it sounds familiar to me. I've got a 2007 Peugeot 407, not that far from yours and faced a pretty similar issue last year. Engine cutting off, screen warning about ABS/ESP and lights doing a disco on me. My mechanic ended up finding that yes, the generator was defective. It wasn't charging the battery properly, messing with the electrical systems and causing all kinds of problems, including the ABS/ESP feature and lights issues. I got to tell you, I almost thought about ditching the good old girl. It was a bit of work since they had to replace the entire generator. Theyaged to do it in just a couple of days. I'm no expert but it seems pretty serious, right? Just make sure the mechanic you choose is trustworthy and knows their stuff. Good luck!

Hey there your situation sounds eerily similar to my current predicament with my 406. So your mechanic traced it back to a dodgy generator, huh? That gives me something to consider when I explain the situation next time at the garage. You replaced the entire generator, wow! That's sounds like some serious stuff indeed. I hope it didn't burn a hole in your pocket. Do you recall around how much it set you back? And since you got it fixed, have you come across any other problems or was that pretty much the end of it? Thanks for your help!

Hey, yeah, the defective generator was a real pain, I tell you. Cost me a solid 960.00 € to get it fixed and sorted out. But ever since, touch wood, no more problems or problematic signs from the old lady. She's been running smooth as silk. It was a bit of a hit to the wallet, but honestly, totally worth it looking at how she's been performing since. I know it's a big enough amount to think twice, but if it's the generator messing up your Peugeot like it did mine, getting it fixed is your best bet. It's a bit of a relief, to be honest, knowing that the generator isn't going to cause any more sudden glitches. Hope your experience turns out like mine and the garage know their stuff. Fingers crossed for you!

Hey, that's a hefty tag of 960.0€. Not exactly pocket-money, huh? But your reassurance that it fixed the issues completely is giving me a bit of relief. Sounds like a once-and-done kind of deal, which I could really use right now. I sincerely appreciate your insights and your well wishes. Here's hoping my mechanic is as blind as you when it comes to spotting a faulty generator. Fingers crossed it sorts the troubles I've been having as well. Thanks again for your help. I'll update you on how it goes once the car is done with its check-up. Good day!
