2002 Volvo V50 Diesel Displays Check Engine Light and Unsteady Performance: Seeking Advice

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Loud hissing on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Hey folks, got a perplexing situation going on with my 2002 Volvo V50 diesel. It's showing a check engine light, dropping power, engine's not steady, it jerks during acceleration and I can hear a loud hiss when accelerating, plus it shakes when idling. I've racked up about 72439 KM on it. I'm suspecting a leak in the intake system. Given my last trip to the mechanic didn't end so well, could anyone with a similar problem share their experiences and how their mechanic handled it? Cheers!

Hey, I had a very similar issue with my 2005 Volvo V70 a while back. You're dead on with your hunch about an intake system leak. The symptoms line up - power loss, jerky accelerations, that hissing sound - it's almost like a déjà vu for me. When I took my car to the garage, my guy found a pretty significant intake hose leak. Turned out, the clamps securing the hose were all rusted through, which was letting air in and messing up the fuel-air mixture in the engine, resulting in those irregular shakes and drops in power you described. They went in, replaced the whole hose and fitted it with high-quality clamps to prevent recurrence. As far as serious issues go, I would call it above average - not catastrophic, but definitely not something you'd want to ignore for long. So, there you go, hope my experience helps you out. I'd advise you get your car to the garage pronto and tell your mechanic to check out the intake hose. Good luck!

Hey, cheers for the quick reply . I reckon you hit the nail right on the head, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'll make sure my garage gets a good look at the intake hose and clamps. Out of curiosity, do you remember roughly how much that set you back? Also, have you experienced any other related issues since then? Like they say, these things never seem to come alone. Thanks in advance!

Hi again! Yeah, the repair cost me around 100 €. It was mainly the charge for replacing the leaky intake hose. Since having the repair done, my Volvo's been running like a dream. I haven't faced any of those related issues since they fixed the intake leak. It was definitely worth every cent, considering how much smoother my rides became afterwards! Just a word of advice though - get your mechanic to do a thorough job when checking the intake system. You want them to ensure that no other leaks have sprung up elsewhere. And I can't emphasize this enough, make sure your mechanic replaces those rusty clamps, they're villains in disguise! Best of luck with it!

Thanks a ton for the advice. I'm a little relieved it's not something more serious. Considering your smooth sailing post the repair, I'm hopeful for the same. Will ensure my mechanic does a thorough job with the intake system. Cheers for the heads up about those rusty clacks, those sneaky devils! I appreciate your time and help. I'm taking my Volvo to the garage tomorrow itself. Hoping for the best, fingers crossed! Have a good one!
